{"id":8611,"date":"2010-01-05T10:00:28","date_gmt":"2010-01-05T15:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=8611"},"modified":"2013-01-21T14:42:26","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T19:42:26","slug":"ex-lobbyist-wants-to-be-your-source-for-election-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2010\/01\/05\/ex-lobbyist-wants-to-be-your-source-for-election-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex\u2013lobbyist wants to be your source for election news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-14728\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2010\/01\/05\/ex%e2%80%93lobbyist-wants-to-be-your-source-for-election-news\/ten-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14728\" title=\"TEN\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/01\/TEN.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/01\/TEN.jpg 500w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/01\/TEN-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just launched Monday, Toronto election news clearinghouse <a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontoelectionnews.com\/\">Toronto Election News<\/a> is a splashy aggregator that aims to be the most comprehensive source of information on the titular topic.\u00a0 When it comes to offering information <a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontoelectionnews.com\/about\/\">about itself<\/a>, however, TEN is a bit more coy.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/mondoville\/status\/7370026673\">Mondoville found<\/a>, not only are all the posts anonymous but a WHOIS search for the domain registration <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whois.net\/whois\/torontoelectionnews.com\">reveals<\/a> that its owner paid a bit extra for the privilege of being able to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rackshare.com\/domain\/whois_privacy.shtml\">obscure his identity<\/a>.\u00a0 That said, it doesn&#8217;t take much clicking (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/mondoville\/status\/7400864210\">or taunting<\/a>) to trace the site back to Tory strategist <a href=\"http:\/\/ca.linkedin.com\/in\/brettdbell\">Brett Bell<\/a>, who most recently served as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/westernstandard.blogs.com\/shotgun\/2009\/05\/is-tim-hudaks-cell-phone-brigade-a-violation-of-privacy-legislation.html#comments\">Social Media director<\/a>&#8221; for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.right-here.ca\/profile\/BrettBell95\">Tim Hudak&#8217;s leadership campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A link in the <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/toelectionnews\/status\/7402677495\">bottom-right corner<\/a> of every TEN page links back to Bell&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Astroturfing\">astroturfing<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/grassrootsonline.ca\/\">business<\/a>, and pulling up his <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/heybrettbell\">personal Twitter account<\/a> reveals:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-14729\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2010\/01\/05\/ex%e2%80%93lobbyist-wants-to-be-your-source-for-election-news\/birthingpains-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14729\" title=\"BirthingPains\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/01\/BirthingPains.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/01\/BirthingPains.jpg 500w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/01\/BirthingPains-300x154.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a former life, Bell was the manager of government relations for lobbying firm the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lyonsgroup.ca\/\">Lyons Group<\/a>, where he helped set up the ironically-named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nowtoronto.com\/news\/story.cfm?content=136660\">&#8220;Toronto Environmental Coalition&#8221;<\/a> on behalf of the pesticide industry. A trip on the Wayback Machine provides a glimpse of <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20030808195511\/www.lyonsgroup.ca\/jeff2.htm\">Jeffrey Lyons<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20030808195650\/www.lyonsgroup.ca\/team2.htm\">and Friends<\/a> in happier days, prior to what could generously be described as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/inquiry\/inquiry_site\/report\/index.html\">the most spectacular crash and burn in City Hall&#8217;s recent history<\/a>. (Honestly, think of the things Lyons had to do to become disgraced as a <em>lobbyist<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>In late 2003 (about midway through the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toronto_Computer_Leasing_Inquiry\">Leasing Inquiry<\/a>), Bell hopped on over to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fasken.com\/government-relations-and-ethics\/\">Fasken Martineau<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nowtoronto.com\/news\/story.cfm?content=149554\">according to an old <em>Now<\/em> article<\/a>, served as their &#8220;key player  at City Hall&#8221; at the time the company was waging war on behalf of <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2006\/01\/07\/eucan-executives-pants-are-on-fire\/\">Eucan and the Megabins<\/a>.\u00a0 One of the dirtiest campaigns I&#8217;ve seen, strategies included <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2006\/08\/04\/eucan-and-misinformation\/\">rigging public consultation results and putting out a libelous press release suggesting that Dave Meslin had a soft spot for sexual assault<\/a> (seriously).\u00a0 Still, Eucan won Mayor Miller&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/contests.eyeweekly.com\/eye\/issue\/issue_07.15.04\/op\/oped.php\">endorsement<\/a> for their eminently terrible product, so they couldn&#8217;t have had the worst lobbyists in the world.<\/p>\n<p>What does any of this have to do with Bell&#8217;s Toronto Election News?\u00a0 Hopefully nothing.\u00a0 There is no reason to believe that the site will necessarily serve as anything other than the non-partisan, unaffiliated resource that it promises to be. At the same time, however, people should know who&#8217;s behind these kinds of news sites, even ones that primarily compile content from elsewhere (including from this blog); it&#8217;s the essence of all credibility, so when a publisher\/editor doesn&#8217;t think his identity is particularly relevant info, then that <em>itself<\/em> becomes Toronto election news.<\/p>\n<p>(UPDATE: 1:50 p.m.) Bell has now fleshed out TEN&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontoelectionnews.com\/about\/\">About page<\/a> to include information about himself.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jonathan Goldsbie is a campaigner for the <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/tpsc\">Toronto Public Space Committee<\/a>, which in 2005-6 successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2006\/06\/28\/eucant-megabins-are-dead\/\">ran Eucan and their Megabins out of town<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just launched Monday, Toronto election news clearinghouse Toronto Election News is a splashy aggregator that aims to be the most comprehensive source of information on the titular topic.\u00a0 When it comes to offering information about itself, however, TEN is a bit more coy.
