{"id":8745,"date":"2010-01-12T11:00:47","date_gmt":"2010-01-12T16:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=8745"},"modified":"2013-01-21T13:39:39","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T18:39:39","slug":"infrastructure-in-action-imagined-and-real","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2010\/01\/12\/infrastructure-in-action-imagined-and-real\/","title":{"rendered":"Public and private infrastructure in action (imagined and real)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/29\/95467581_70d4f229ea.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Twitterverse recently led me to an <a href=\"http:\/\/magicalnihilism.com\/2008\/12\/12\/the-bourne-infrastructure\/\" target=\"_blank\">interesting blog post<\/a> that pointed out how, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Bourne_Identity_%282002_film%29\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Bourne<\/em> movies<\/a>, the Jason Bourne character &#8220;uses public infrastructure as a superpower.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>A battered watch and an accurate <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Berlin U-Bahn\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berlin_U-Bahn\">U-Bahn<\/a> time-table are all he needs for a perfectly-timed, death-defying evasion of the authorities. &#8230; Bourne wraps cities, autobahns, ferries and train terminuses around him as the ultimate body-armour.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The writer contrasts this with a character like James Bond who is backed by plentiful resources and so uses powerful, private high-tech gadgets to pursue his ends.<\/p>\n<p>It makes sense &#8212; Bourne is a man with almost no resources, and public infrastructure is built to give those who have few resources a range of potential activity comparable to those whose resources are plentiful.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I got to this post from another, <a href=\"http:\/\/bldgblog.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/nakatomi-space.html\" target=\"_blank\">very interesting post on BLDGBLOG<\/a> that talks about how the Israeli army, in its conflicts with Palestinians in the West Bank\/Gaza Strip, bypassed exposed public space and made its way<em> through<\/em> buildings, blasting holes in separating walls and re-structuring architecture to suit its needs. The post is inspired by an essay by Israeli architect Eyal Weizman, who describes how:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>soldiers used none of the streets, roads, alleys, or courtyards that constitute the syntax of the city, and none of the external doors, internal stairwells, and windows that constitute the order of buildings, but rather moved horizontally through party walls, and vertically through holes blasted in ceilings and floors.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The author talks about how this echoes the way architecture is used and re-shaped for the purposes of violence in the action movie <em>Die Hard<\/em>, which he describes as &#8220;one of the best architectural films of the past 25 years&#8221;
