{"id":893,"date":"2006-06-19T22:14:17","date_gmt":"2006-06-20T02:14:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=893"},"modified":"2013-01-21T14:51:21","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T19:51:21","slug":"sprawl-from-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2006\/06\/19\/sprawl-from-space\/","title":{"rendered":"Sprawl from Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"217\" alt=\"Sattelite map of St. Louis sprawl\" src=\"http:\/\/diegopuga.org\/data\/sprawl\/maps\/sprawl_stlouis.jpg\" width=\"313\" \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two University of Toronto profs and some others have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.utoronto.ca\/bin6\/060426-2240.asp\">studied the spread of urban sprawl<\/a> in the late 20th century by creating <a href=\"http:\/\/diegopuga.org\/data\/sprawl\/maps\/\">composite satellite maps of American cities<\/a> comparing 1976 and 1992, and looking at the amount of open space around houses in every U.S. city.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the findings are suprising, such as that L.A. is relatively compact. Here&#8217;s another of their many findings:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><!--StartFragment -->One of the common complaints about urban sprawl is that as development spreads, municipal services such as roads, sewers, police and fire protection are more expensive. The authors suggest that this concern is well founded. Development in municipalities that receive larger subsidies from higher levels of government is, on average, more scattered.
