{"id":979,"date":"2006-07-13T00:01:28","date_gmt":"2006-07-13T04:01:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=979"},"modified":"2013-01-21T13:05:19","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T18:05:19","slug":"statscan-releases-commuting-figures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2006\/07\/13\/statscan-releases-commuting-figures\/","title":{"rendered":"Statscan releases commuting figures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ruf.dk\/ill\/w240\/congestion.jpg\" \/>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20060712.wcommute0719\/BNStory\/Business\/home\"><em>Globe and Mail<\/em><\/a> today:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The average Canadian spends more than an hour a day &#8212; or 12 full days a year &#8212; trekking to and from work, according to a new study that shows commuting by car is still faster than using public transit.<\/p>\n<p>Given that the average worker is entitled to between three and four weeks of vacation each year, the data suggests that some Canadians spend almost as much time getting to and from work as they do on holiday.<br \/>\nAccording to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statcan.ca\/english\/research\/89-622-XIE\/89-622-XIE2006001.pdf\">Statistics Canada report released Wednesday<\/a> [PDF 448k] said that Canadians wasted an average 63 minutes a day getting from home to work and back in 2005. The round-trip commute has climbed from 54 minutes in 1992 and 59 minutes in 1998.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I find it odd that the <em>Globe and Mail<\/em> would consider commuting to work a &#8220;waste&#8221; of time. Anyway, there were other numbers revealed in the report:<\/p>\n<p>&bull; <strong>drivers<\/strong> averaged 59 minutes on the road<br \/>\n&bull; <strong>transit riders<\/strong> averaged 106 minutes travelling<br \/>\n&bull; <strong>carpoolers<\/strong> averaged 71 mintues on the road<\/p>\n<p>&bull; 86% of workers <strong>drive<\/strong> to work<br \/>\n&bull; 12% of workers use <strong>transit<\/strong> all or part of their commute<br \/>\n&bull; 11% <strong>walked<\/strong> or <strong>biked<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>(which adds up to 109% &#8212; probably due to the combination of any of the four modes)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&bull; 20% use transit in Canada&#8217;s six largest cities<br \/>\n&bull; Toronto 2005 commute: 79 minutes (increased by 11 minutes since 1992)<br \/>\n&bull; Montreal 2005 commute: 76 minutes<br \/>\n&bull; Calgary 2005 commute: 66 minutes<br \/>\n&bull; both Montreal and Calgary saw average commuting times increase by 14 mintues since 1992<br \/>\n&bull; Commuting in Vancouver has not increased since 1992<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Globe and Mail today: The average Canadian spends more than an hour a day &#8212; or 12 full days a year &#8212; trekking to and from work, according to a new study that shows commuting by car is still faster than using public transit.
