Yes, this is Los Angeles – the second in our series.\u00a0 But where exactly?\u00a0 And why is a space like this – beyond being ‘green’ – so important in the life of the city?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

That’s\u00a0a peak in Runyon Canyon Park.\u00a0 (More\u00a0about its\u00a0very Hollywood-history here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Entrance to the park is just\u00a0two blocks from\u00a0Hollywood Boulevard (map here<\/a>), and hence it’s a favoured people (and star)-watching space with some truly fabulous views: the city to the south, the homes of the Hollywood hillbillies all around.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

.<\/p>\n

But it’s also a kind of outdoor gymnasium: a year-round fitness centre for running, biking, power walking, stair climbing and yoga.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The trails can be crowded, along with\u00a0the usual indicators of overuse:\u00a0soil erosion, dog-people-bike conflicts, parking issues.\u00a0 That’s also evidence\u00a0of\u00a0how few\u00a0parks there are\u00a0in this surprisingly dense city, and, like most urban areas, how few\u00a0options there\u00a0are for people to integrate ‘workouts’ into other aspects of their lives.\u00a0\u00a0Los Angeles is not yet a city where active transportation is realistic, and so people have to go to places like Runyon Canyon to engage\u00a0in vigorous motion on their own two feet.<\/p>\n

Urban designers, planners and engineers need to think consciously about how to\u00a0design\u00a0workout<\/em> spaces into the city – streets for\u00a0cycling, sidewalks for\u00a0running, stairs\u00a0for climbing – when money is being spent on transportation infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Here’s an\u00a0example from Calgary – the Sunnyside Bank stairs (map here<\/a>):<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Of course there’s our seawall, which can be used for both transportation and recreation.\u00a0 Indeed, the point is to completely blur the line between the two.\u00a0\u00a0In our culture, leisure is not something passively experienced, biking to work is not just for environmental brownie points, taking the stairs is not just to\u00a0save time.\u00a0 We want to get our heart rate up, damn it.<\/p>\n

As obesity and basic fitness demand more serious\u00a0attention,\u00a0as ‘walkability’ becomes an\u00a0economic indicator,\u00a0as\u00a0living spaces get smaller, these places also become more necessary.\u00a0 And our workouts get integrated into the very fabric of the city.<\/p>\n
