into other aspects of their lives.\u00a0\u00a0Los Angeles is not yet a city where active transportation is realistic, and so people have to go to places like Runyon Canyon to engage\u00a0in vigorous motion on their own two feet.<\/p>\n<p>Urban designers, planners and engineers need to think consciously about how to\u00a0design\u00a0<em>workout<\/em> spaces into the city &#8211; streets for\u00a0cycling, sidewalks for\u00a0running, stairs\u00a0for climbing &#8211; when money is being spent on transportation infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an\u00a0example from Calgary &#8211; the Sunnyside Bank stairs <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.ca\/maps?q=Crescent+and+NW+2+calgary&amp;hl=en&amp;ll=51.059173,-114.069028&amp;spn=0.005563,0.009624&amp;sll=51.073235,-114.09299&amp;sspn=0.044492,0.07699&amp;t=h&amp;hnear=2+St+NW+%26+Crescent+Rd+NW,+Calgary,+Division+No.+6,+Alberta&amp;z=17\" target=\"_blank\">(map here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/05\/28\/price-points-city-as-workout\/pa190255\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10379\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10379 aligncenter\" title=\"PA190255\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/PA190255.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"404\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/PA190255.jpg 404w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/PA190255-378x600.jpg 378w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 404px) 100vw, 404px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course there&#8217;s our seawall, which can be used for both transportation and recreation.\u00a0 Indeed, the point is to completely blur the line between the two.\u00a0\u00a0In our culture, leisure is not something passively experienced, biking to work is not just for environmental brownie points, taking the stairs is not just to\u00a0save time.\u00a0 We want to get our heart rate up, damn it.<\/p>\n<p>As obesity and basic fitness demand more serious\u00a0attention,\u00a0as &#8216;walkability&#8217; becomes an\u00a0economic indicator,\u00a0as\u00a0living spaces get smaller, these places also become more necessary.\u00a0 And our workouts get integrated into the very fabric of the city.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<div><em><strong>Gordon Price<\/strong> is the Director of The City Program at Simon Fraser University.
