Boulevard &#8211; Ready for its Close-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last February, just before I left for a study tour of L.A., I posted this image and asked: What is it about that shot, taken in the early 1930s, that is so curiously contemporary?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/06\/04\/price-points-the-l-a-boulevard-ready-for-its-close-up\/brown-derby-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10677\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10677 aligncenter\" title=\"Brown-Derby\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Brown-Derby1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"639\" height=\"454\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/spacingmedia.com\/spacingvancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/features\/pricepoints-feature-VAN.gif \" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"72\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Within minutes of the posting, Ken Ohrn responded:\u00a0 &#8220;a guy with head down, stepping into the street &#8212; looking for all the world like he&#8217;s on his smartphone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Exactly right, Ken &#8211; the chap is probably reading a book he just purchased at the store next to the orginal Brown Derby restaurant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As it happened, our study tour walked right by this block, not far from the Wilshire-Vermont Metro stop (<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.ca\/maps?q=3256+Wilshire+Boulevard,+Los+Angeles+CA,+United+States&amp;hl=en&amp;ll=34.06185,-118.2937&amp;spn=0.007333,0.009624&amp;sll=34.062611,-118.293319&amp;sspn=0.002592,0.002406&amp;t=h&amp;hnear=3256+Wilshire+Blvd,+Los+Angeles,+California+90010,+United+States&amp;z=17\" target=\"_blank\">map here<\/a>) in what is now part of Little Korea.\u00a0 This is what that stretch of Wilshire looks like today:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/06\/04\/price-points-the-l-a-boulevard-ready-for-its-close-up\/dsc_0399\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10678\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10678\" title=\"DSC_0399\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/DSC_0399.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/DSC_0399.jpg 640w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/DSC_0399-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more-->More trees &#8211; and way more traffic.\u00a0 No mid-block\u00a0jaywalkers idling their way\u00a0across Wilshire Boulevard &#8211; nor, with very few exceptions, anywhere else in Los Angeles.\u00a0 Like, for instance, here:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/06\/04\/price-points-the-l-a-boulevard-ready-for-its-close-up\/dsc_0915\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10679\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10679\" title=\"DSC_0915\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/DSC_0915.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/DSC_0915.jpg 640w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/DSC_0915-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is La Cienega\u00a0Boulevard, looking north at Jefferson from the platform of a newly opened Expo-line light-rail station <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.ca\/maps?q=W+Jefferson+and+S+La+Cienega+Los+Angeles&amp;hl=en&amp;sll=49.891235,-97.15369&amp;sspn=42.780056,84.111328&amp;t=h&amp;hnear=S+La+Cienega+Blvd+%26+W+Jefferson+Blvd,+Los+Angeles,+California+90016,+United+States&amp;z=17\" target=\"_blank\">(map here<\/a>).\u00a0 The pedestrian, you notice, is obediently sticking to the crosswalk as the traffic piles up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And this, like Wilshire above, illustrates the main problem, and challenge, for L.A.\u00a0 It was not so much the freeways\u00a0that ruined this metropolis; it was the transformation of the boulevards into <a href=\"http:\/\/pricetags.wordpress.com\/2012\/03\/08\/stroads-and-the-old\/\" target=\"_blank\">stroads<\/a>: what Charles Marohn defined as the hybrid that combines the\u00a0fast moving traffic of a road with the intersections and complexity of a street.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Thanks to the Major Traffic Street Plan of 1924 and a half-century of street widening &#8211; adding lanes, narrowing sidewalks, speeding up the traffic &#8211; Los Angeles failed to\u00a0enhance the commercial\u00a0villages that could have so well served the mosaic of neighbourhoods that define the city today.\u00a0 (The separately incorporated cities &#8211; Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills &#8211; actually have made the effort.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Instead of\u00a0just the freeways carrying the bulk of cross-regional traffic, Los Angeles engineers\u00a0tried to turn their boulevards into highways too, creating\u00a0endless miles of commercial strips &#8211; ugly, cheap, lost opportunities, especially given the values of the real estate that surrounds them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/06\/04\/price-points-the-l-a-boulevard-ready-for-its-close-up\/melrose\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10684\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10684\" title=\"Melrose\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Melrose.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Melrose.jpg 640w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Melrose-600x310.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And that&#8217;s what&#8217;s beginning to change, and why a good part of Los Angeles &#8211; the sections originally served by the red and yellow cars of the streetcar system &#8211; is on the verge of transformation.\u00a0 (Christopher Hawthorne, the L.A. Times\u00a0architecure critic, has even started a series on the boulevards, beginning with one you&#8217;ve probably never heard of &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2012\/may\/13\/entertainment\/la-ca-boulevards-atlantic-20120513\" target=\"_blank\">Atlantic<\/a>.\u00a0)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Indeed, because of changes well underway,\u00a0L.A. may seem like a very different city in a decade or so &#8211; one in which, when you visit, you may not need or want\u00a0to rent a car.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll explain why\u00a0next week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">***<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><strong>Gordon Price<\/strong> is the Director of The City Program at Simon Fraser University.
