Writing Vancouver<\/em> is a bi-weekly section that highlights local talent in the literary arts. Over the coming weeks, Spacing Vancouver readers will be treated to a selected number of poems, stories and essays from the recently released\u00a0 V6A: Writing from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n We invite our readers to submit<\/a> their own pieces for publication. We look forward to helping spread the word!<\/p>\n \u2022\u2022\u2022<\/p>\n ANNE HOPKINSON Evelyn<\/em> to school for a week, Some kids hold their noses and laugh,<\/p>\n but she smiles and plays and tries to read, <\/p>\n She\u2019s a Native girl from Hazelton, not a city girl. Evelyn and her sister camp out They take food from the market, and some blankets<\/p>\n and pillows from home, <\/p>\n Five nights they sleep there, and come to school each day,<\/p>\n until they are picked up by police Evelyn screams, and her sister screams alone<\/p>\n in the night by the city tracks,<\/p>\n and she comes to school the week after,<\/p>\n her eyes big and brown as she chooses Breno<\/em> Lisa Camparmo<\/em> Mason Wu<\/em> but I do all the talking.<\/p>\n I give him time to answer,<\/p>\n but he only nods or shakes his head.<\/p>\n I open the book of trucks and say trucks,<\/p>\n but he just looks at the pictures.<\/p>\n I send Sammy over with his battleship book<\/p>\n and they start right in,<\/p>\n I see him flip the pages back and forth,<\/p>\n pointing and chattering.<\/p>\n I nod when he looks up at me to confirm<\/p>\n it\u2019s okay to speak Chinese.<\/p>\n I find the geometric shapes for math,<\/p>\n and Mason bounces from his desk.<\/p>\n I give him a pile to make a pattern,<\/p>\n and Mason creates an incremental spiral.<\/p>\n I say triangle<\/em> and he says triangle<\/em>, I say square<\/em><\/p>\n and he says square<\/em>.<\/p>\n Brian<\/em> Brian is at the door when the man comes,<\/p>\n for the shouting, Brian is there in the apartment through the night<\/p>\n with the neighbours, Are you all right? asks the neighbour. Okay, little fella? asks the cop. Are you injured? asks the man in white. <\/p>\n No one notices when Brian leaves; and finds his lunch in the fridge, all ready to go.<\/p>\n how he gets his backpack and runners, and meets Jason in front of the building.<\/p>\n how they walk with Marco,<\/p>\n all the way to school.<\/p>\n Brian comes into the classroom the morning after<\/p>\n his mother is killed. but then as the children sit in a circle<\/p>\n his legs shake stiff and jerky, howling, peeing, and clinging to the edge of the carpet. Good thing we hired carpet cleaning Minneapolis<\/a> to take care of the mess.<\/p>\n \u2022\u2022\u2022<\/p>\n <\/strong><\/em>Anne Hopkinson<\/strong> writes with Thursdays Writing Collective at the Carnegie Centre and was a teacher in the DTES. \nEvelyn wears the same pink shorts and T-shirt<\/p>\n
\nthey are dirty, she is dirty.<\/p>\n
\ntries to print, her small brown hands
\nare dirty and scraped,
\nher chipped pink nail polish is almost gone.<\/p>\n
\nSo when drinking parties go on too loud and too long<\/p>\n
\nby the tracks in an empty fridge box.<\/p>\n
\nand a candle in a jar.<\/p>\n
\nwhen the box catches on fire.<\/p>\n
\nart paper. \u201cPink, please.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe\u2019s a young prince in training. He\u2019s short and round, with dark eyes and dark curly hair that his mother fondles in the playground as she kisses him good-bye. She hovers at the classroom door. He\u2019s well- dressed in a classroom of children who aren\u2019t. Sometimes she comes into the cloakroom and kneels down on the wet floor to help him get his boots off. She shakes the rain from his coat and hangs it on the hook.
\nBreno has chocolate bar sandwiches every day for lunch: two pieces of white bread, buttered, with slabs of milk chocolate in be- tween. \u201cHe won\u2019t eat anything else,\u201d his mother sighs, and tucks a powdered doughnut in his backpack for recess.
\n\u201cHe\u2019s a good boy, yes? Good at school?\u201d But she doesn\u2019t listen to the answer; she knows it\u2019s not what she wants to hear.
\n\u201cCould we meet one day after school to talk about his progress? Mrs Madeiros? How about tomorrow?\u201d
\nShe refolds his paint smock in his cubbyhole. Breno fusses with his backpack. \u201cWhere\u2019s my library books?\u201d He stamps his feet.
\n\u201cYou forgot them,\u201d he says. She bends to look at him, and he whacks her on the shoulder. She speaks rapidly and softly in Portu- guese and he stomps off to his desk, pushing a child out of his way.
\n\u201cI come back with the books for the library, okay?\u201d She hurries out.<\/p>\n
\nLisa is the classroom thief, I\u2019m almost sure. I wait here behind the door to catch her in the act, to talk to her about stealing, and to talk her into returning the trading cards to her classmates. I think they will forgive her easily, because they like her so much.
\nLisa is fast and thin; she runs instead of walking. She is the first in line, the first outside at recess, lunch, and at 3:01. She dashes around the classroom to find a missing pencil, pick up a fallen poster, or col- lect the papers. On the playground she runs for the pure pleasure ofrunning, collapses in a complete bliss of exhaustion.
\nShe\u2019s the surprise child of the Camparmo family, born late in life to
\nparents of six children already. The next oldest, Chiara, is seventeen, a nine-year gap. She will marry after her next birthday and join her siblings in making lots of babies.
\nBut what of Lisa the Quick, Lisa the Agile? Will she be quick enough and agile enough to dodge the accepted route to adulthood? Will her speed in foot races keep her ahead of the pack, running full out through any traditional finish line? Will she steal what she needs to escape her predictable fate?<\/p>\n
\nI think I will draw him out,<\/p>\n
\nBrian\u2019s mother is killed in the night.<\/p>\n
\nfor the stabbing,
\nfor the quiet.<\/p>\n
\nwith the cops,
\nwith the ambulance men.<\/p>\n
\nBlood sticks, says Brian.<\/p>\n
\nScreams hurt, says Brian.<\/p>\n
\nMum says she loves me, says Brian.<\/p>\n
\nhow he brushes his teeth,<\/p>\n
\nhow he grabs his football,<\/p>\n
\nHe is humming, rocking,<\/p>\n
\nhis hands are clenched,
\nand his teeth clack out 9-1-1, 9-1-1, 9-1-1<\/p>\n
