We are blessed to be surrounded by \u00a0mountains, forests, oceans and rivers. But how well do we know about nature in \u00a0our own backyard? The Earth and the natural world are present everywhere \u2013 from \u00a0the gardens of Kitsilano to the Lost Streams of False Creek to the mighty Fraser \u00a0\u00a0River and even at the \u00a0local shopping centre!<\/p>\n<p>Please \u00a0join us for this exciting series of free walks this \u00a0summer and fall. The leaders are amazingly knowledgeable in their specialty &#8211; \u00a0so come along to listen to their words, connect with the land and ask lots of \u00a0questions!<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) \u201cPlace of many bridges &#8211; a walk through history on the Fraser River&#8217;s North Arm&#8221; with Terry Slack<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Saturday August 11 \/ 10:30AM \u2013 12:30 PM<\/em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Helvetica,Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Please: only for those who are NOT afraid of heights!<\/p>\n<p>Meet at the lower level of the Marine Drive Canada Line station at\u00a010:30 AM. You can bring your bike. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.translink.ca\/%7E\/media\/documents\/schedules_and_maps\/stn_exch\/marinedrive.ashx\">http:\/\/www.translink.ca\/~\/media\/documents\/schedules_and_maps\/stn_exch\/marinedrive.ashx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since the beginning of the 19th century when Simon Fraser was the first white man to make a trip from inland to the\u00a0river&#8217;s mouth &#8211; the Fraser River has seen many changes.\u00a0Listen to Terry tell the story of how the river has evolved to deal with the millions of humans who now live on its shores.<\/p>\n<p>Terry will lead you over the Skytrain bridge\u00a0from Marpole and South Vancouver to Richmond.\u00a0Listen to tales about the North Arm of the Fraser River. Find out about the\u00a0history, the\u00a0fish stories and how a river works.<\/p>\n<p>And then some more discussions: how do you envision this large now vacant piece of riverfront land\u00a0looking in the\u00a0next few years?<\/p>\n<p>Terry Slack is a retired fisherman who grew up on the North Arm. He is a community historian, a naturalist, an activist and a salmon person. At 7th and St. George&#8217;s she will stop to discuss the new mural!<\/p>\n<p>This mural was created by the St. George Street Rainway group. It was created to bring awareness about the proposed daylighting of St. George&#8217;s Creek.<\/p>\n<p>Greta Borick Cunningham is a keen naturalist and very interested in the local ecosystems. She just completed a Diploma at BCIT in Sustainable Resource Management.\u00a0 She lives on \u00a0St. George Street, is part of the Rainway group and also is the Chair of the False Creek Watershed Society. She is presently working at Alouette River Management Society in Maple Ridge.<\/p>\n<p>Please register at:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/earthwalks3fraser.eventbrite.com\/?ref=elink\">http:\/\/earthwalks4stg.eventbrite.com\/?ref=elink<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>3) &#8220;Cottonwood Gardens \u2013 Paradise in the City\u201d with Len Kydd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Saturday August 25 \/ 10:30AM \u2013 12:30 PM<\/em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Helvetica,Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meet at:\u00a0\u00a0Cottonwood Garden eastern entrance : near the corner Raymur and Malkin\u00a0just south of Prior, just opposite the Vancouver Animal Shelter.<\/p>\n<p>We will walk around Cottonwood\u00a0Garden looking at the garden itself and the structures that were created there.<\/p>\n<p>The history of this garden and how the community came together to create it is very interesting &#8211; it is a model of how community engagement and positive creation can create paradise!<\/p>\n<p>Len Kydd has gardened at Cottonwood from around the time it was started in 1992.
