Sunday,\u00a0August 26, 2012, from 2 to 6 pm<\/strong>,\u00a0Library Square, Robson at Homer Street<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Why\u00a0SING!<\/em>\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>\n\u201cOne of this city’s strengths is its variety of culturally distinct communities,\u00a0says architect and Urban Republic director Peeroj Thakre, \u201cyet many Vancouverites find there are too few opportunities to interact on a social level with people from other communities.\u201d\u00a0 A lack of social connections between people of different ethnicities, ages, and linguistic groups has been identified as a concern\u00a0 in Metro Vancouver1<\/sup>.\u00a0\u00a0In response,\u00a0Sing!<\/em>\u00a0Karaoke Kiosk offers a cross-cultural platform for people from diverse\u00a0backgrounds and ages to participate in a public event.\u00a0In Vancouver, where over 50% of residents have a mother tongue other than English2<\/sup>,\u00a0karaoke is a popular and accessible form\u00a0of\u00a0entertainment within many cultures. The karaoke kiosk aims to draw people together by offering songlists in Vancouver\u2019s\u00a0most widely spoken languages.<\/p>\nEnhancing Public Space<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/strong>The self-contained outdoor Karaoke Kiosk structure is also a catalyst to animate public spaces through spontaneous activity.\u00a0 Urban Republic has designed the Kiosk to adapt to a variety of urban sites, such as sidewalks, streets, parks and even a single parking spot. Pending public feedback and additional partners and sponsors, Urban Republic will seek to bring the Karaoke Kiosk to neighbourhoods throughout Vancouver in the future.\u00a0Sing!<\/em>\u00a0videos, photos and experiences can be shared on social media sites\u00a0at the tag\u00a0#urSing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
