This means that community organizations that are used to not having to pay property taxes are going start next year.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that direct government workers have not had a pay raise in three-and-a-half years forced more than 27,000 unionized government workers across the province to participate in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bclocalnews.com\/news\/169048416.html\" target=\"_blank\">one-day strike <\/a>earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>Great news in Dawson Creek &#8211; home to one of British Columbia\u2019s worst droughts in decades &#8211; as Mayor Mike Bernier cut the ribbon on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/british-columbia\/dawson-creek-and-shell-elude-water-shortage-crisis\/article4531896\/?cmpid=rss1\" target=\"_blank\">multimillion-dollar water treatment plant<\/a> that is making sewage clean enough to sprinkle on park lawns.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Smithers Mayor Taylor Bachrach and his council have asked the Union of B.C. Municipalities to petition the province to establish and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouversun.com\/news\/Mayors+call+shuttle+along+dangerous+highway\/7220632\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">fund public transit along Highway 16 between Prince George and Prince Rupert<\/a> &#8211; the so-called Highway of Tears &#8211; where many young women were believed to have been hitchhiking when they disappeared or were murdered over the past four decades.<\/p>\n<p>B.C. Transit union <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouversun.com\/business\/transit+union+members+take+strike+vote+today\/7234319\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">votes 98 per cent in favour of strike<\/a> to support their demands for a fair collective agreement.<\/p>\n<p>In response to two design proposals that evoked a strong negative reaction from Penticton community members,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bclocalnews.com\/news\/169704286.html\" target=\"_blank\">two new dramatically different concepts<\/a> have been put forth for the Okanagan Lake waterfront.<\/p>\n<p>The large Morgan Place Developments Ltd. commercial and office space development slated for the South Surrey 25-acre parcel of property at 20 Avenue, just east of Highway 99 council is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surreyleader.com\/news\/169682126.html\" target=\"_blank\">moving forward<\/a> despite concerns about the loss of\u00a0417 trees and traffic impacts.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A weekly roundup of noteworthy news in municipalities across B.C.
