But how much of what we call public space is really public? In the second annual\u00a0Warren Gill Memorial Lecture, author and critic\u00a0Mark Kingwell will consider this problem, together with its implications for the notion of urban play and the so-called &#8216;right to the city.&#8217; He will conclude with some reflections on the relationship between the city and the university.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin: 8px;\" title=\"Mark Kingwell\" src=\"http:\/\/sfucity.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/10\/kingwell.jpg?w=455\" alt=\"Mark Kingwell\" width=\"150\" \/>Author and critic\u00a0<strong>Mark Kingwell\u00a0<\/strong>is an award-winning professor of philosophy at the University of Toronto and a contributing editor of Harper\u2019s Magazine. He is the author or co-author of seventeen books of political, cultural and aesthetic theory, including the national bestsellers Better Living (1998), The World We Want (2000), Concrete Reveries (2008), and Glenn Gould (2009).<\/p>\n<p>His writing has appeared in more than 40 mainstream publications, including Harper\u2019s, The New York Times, the New York Post, the Wall Street Journal, the Guardian, Utne Reader, BookForum, The Walrus, Toronto Life, the Toronto Star, and Queen\u2019s Quarterly; he is also a former columnist for Adbusters, the National Post, and The Globe and Mail.
