{"id":19978,"date":"2013-04-04T12:00:11","date_gmt":"2013-04-04T19:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/?p=19978"},"modified":"2020-01-29T09:06:22","modified_gmt":"2020-01-29T17:06:22","slug":"nfbs-hyperlocal-takes-a-personal-look-at-canadas-shifting-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2013\/04\/04\/nfbs-hyperlocal-takes-a-personal-look-at-canadas-shifting-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"NFB&#8217;s Hyperlocal takes a personal look at Canada\u2019s shifting communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is producing six interactive stories for <b><i>Hyperlocal <\/i><\/b>(<a href=\"http:\/\/hyperlocal.nfb.ca\/#\/hyperlocal\">nfb.ca\/hyperlocal<\/a>), an online collection of personal observations about change in Canadian neighbourhoods, commissioned by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/books\/canadawrites\/\">CBC Canada Writes<\/a> and launching today.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the NFB\u2019s leadership role in exploring and telling stories from Canada\u2019s communities, this unique collaboration between the NFB and CBC Canada Writes adds a visual and interactive dimension to personal stories. <b><i>Hyperlocal<\/i><\/b> adapts the work of prominent Canadian writers Joseph Boyden, Will Ferguson, Lisa Moore, Heather O\u2019Neill and Miriam Toews, as well as a user-generated story to be chosen via the <em>Canada Writes Hyperlocal Storytelling Challenge<\/em>, which runs through May 3 at <a href=\"http:\/\/hyperlocal.cbc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cbc.ca\/hyperlocal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->These interactive works are produced by the NFB\u2019s Webby Award-winning Digital Studio. The project is headed by creative director Sean Embury (FULSCRN) and art director Jeremy Mendes (NFB), with an art direction and design team that includes The Goggles (<a href=\"http:\/\/pinepoint.nfb.ca\/#\/pinepoint\"><i>Welcome to Pine Point<\/i><\/a>), Kevin Airgid and Steve Mackey, and Jen Moss as interactive producer and Loc Dao as executive producer for the NFB. Sarah Gilbert is the commissioning editor for CBC Canada Writes.<\/p>\n<p><b>The project<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The concept of \u201chyperlocality\u201d now permeates everything, from the way we source our food to the way we consume media. As the Internet elevates the personal to the public, it brings micro stories out to macro audiences. In this climate, \u201cthe little things\u201d are getting noticed like never before, and we are discovering that these are the things that bind us together.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Hyperlocal<\/i><\/b> challenges the notion of what constitutes change. Too often we dismiss our own observations, thinking they are somehow less significant than those of others.\u00a0\u00a0But a crack in the sidewalk, a fresh coat of paint, or an unfamiliar family down the street can be as telling as the stories on the six o\u2019clock news\u2015and these small changes all happening concurrently amount to big shifts, in both culture and communication.<\/p>\n<p>The <b><i>Hyperlocal<\/i><\/b> interactive stories are:<\/p>\n<p><b>Joseph Boyden:<\/b> <b><i>Building Something<\/i><\/b> (James Bay)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A campfire symbolizes the spirit of change in Joseph Boyden\u2019s piece about teaching wilderness skills to Aboriginal kids as a way of helping them build self-esteem. Art direction by Sean Embury.<\/p>\n<p><b>Will Ferguson: <i>Garrison Woods<\/i> <\/b>(Calgary)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A former army barracks becomes the site of block parties and barbeques in this layered look at change over time in Will Ferguson\u2019s Calgary neighbourhood of Garrison Woods. Art direction by The Goggles.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lisa Moore: <i>Traffic<\/i> <\/b>(St. John\u2019s)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Lisa Moore and her neighbours used to leave the doors to their downtown St. John\u2019s homes unlocked\u2014but the sense of unease that has accompanied the growing traffic from the prostitution trade in the area has changed everyone\u2019s viewpoint. Art direction by Sean Embury.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b>Heather O\u2019Neill: <i>The Red Light District<\/i> <\/b>(Montreal)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In her evocative look at change around the Montreal intersection of St. Catherine and St. Laurent, Heather O\u2019Neill observes that in eradicating the ugly, you inevitably rub out some of the beauty too. Art direction by The Goggles.<\/p>\n<p><b>Miriam Toews: <i>My Hometown<\/i> <\/b>(Steinbach, Manitoba)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Evidence of change is everywhere in the once rigid Mennonite community Miriam Toews grew up in; as a young person she couldn\u2019t wait to get out, as an adult\u2015she\u2019s not sure she entirely approves. Art direction by Kevin Airgid.<\/p>\n<p><b>User Submission: Winning interactive project<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The winner of the Canada Writes Hyperlocal Storytelling Challenge will get their story of local change turned into an interactive project by the NFB\u2019s Digital Studio.
