{"id":2068,"date":"2011-08-15T08:24:26","date_gmt":"2011-08-15T15:24:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingvancouver.ca\/?p=2068"},"modified":"2013-01-21T07:19:24","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T15:19:24","slug":"price-points-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/08\/15\/price-points-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Price Points"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s this about?<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2075\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/08\/15\/price-points-2\/olympus-digital-camera\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2075\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Gas-station.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Gas-station.jpg 640w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Gas-station-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2077\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/08\/15\/price-points-2\/pricepoints-feature-van1-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2077\" title=\"pricepoints-feature-VAN[1]\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/pricepoints-feature-VAN11.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"72\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yes, it&#8217;s a gas station.\u00a0 Not much\u00a0different than the other 12,684 stations in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>But this one is exceptional: it is one of only two on the Downtown Peninsula of Vancouver (<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.ca\/maps?q=1698+West+Georgia+Street,+Vancouver,+British+Columbia&amp;hl=en&amp;ll=49.291497,-123.132105&amp;spn=0.0055,0.009838&amp;sll=49.891235,-97.15369&amp;sspn=44.813761,80.595703&amp;t=h&amp;z=17\" target=\"_blank\">map here<\/a>).\u00a0 The other is at Davie and Burrard.<\/p>\n<p>These pumps serve a population of over a hundred thousand.\u00a0 And even though a lot of those who live on the peninsula don&#8217;t have cars, this is also the first gas station immediately visible from the road for drivers on Highway 99 coming from the north as far as Squamish &#8211; about 50 kilometres away.<\/p>\n<p>And yet it&#8217;s not that busy.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->As oil companies have consolidated and gotten out of the retail end of the business, those\u00a0prime sites with high values,\u00a0offering a product with low mark-up, were worth way more as\u00a0real estate.\u00a0 And so the number of stations in Canada has been dropping by about a thousand a year.<\/p>\n<p>But still,\u00a0though cars have become more fuel efficient,\u00a0there have been more of them.\u00a0 Why aren&#8217;t the remaining stations busier, particularly here, where the population\u00a0in the last two decades has doubled?<\/p>\n<p>Could it be that we&#8217;re\u00a0reaching peak car?\u00a0 \u00a0Some recent studies argue that at least in developed countries, we\u00a0are starting to see a decline in car use.\u00a0 Peter Newman and Jeff Kenworthy make the case here in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/worldstreets.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/23\/newman-and-kenworth-on-peak-car-use\/#more-6600\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Peak Car Use\u2019: Understanding the Demise of Automobile Dependence.<\/a> <\/em> And Clark Williams-Derry documents what&#8217;s happening in Cascadia in his series:<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/daily.sightline.org\/blog_series\/dude-where-are-my-cars\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dude, Where Are\u00a0My Cars?<\/a> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Given the value of the site at Georgia and Burrard, I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised to see Downtown Vancouver drop to one &#8211; one! &#8211; gas station.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s this about?
