every business car dependent, every subdivision\u00a0feeding more vehicles into overloaded intersections.<a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2425\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/08\/29\/price-points-arterial\/vedder-interchange\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->As Highway 1 is widened and its\u00a0interchanges expanded, the\u00a0future is already being realized at the Vedder interchange (<em>below, click to enlarge<\/em>),\u00a0where nearly a square\u00a0kilometre is completely paved over with surface parking lots,\u00a0surrounding the\u00a0one-storey\u00a0boxes\u00a0that occupy\u00a0less than half\u00a0their sites.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2431\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2431\" style=\"width: 307px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Vedder-interchange2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2431\" title=\"Vedder interchange\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Vedder-interchange2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"307\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Vedder-interchange2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Vedder-interchange2-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2431\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vedder interchange<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is the a precursor of the Gateway Effect,\u00a0as the Trans-Canada Highway is turned into the Main Street of Fraser Valley suburbia, only prevented from merging into one endless strip mall by the Agricultural Land Reserve.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2438\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/08\/29\/price-points-arterial\/a-village-copy-2\/\"><\/a><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2441\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/08\/29\/price-points-arterial\/a-village-copy-3\/\"><\/a>Not that this is the only future possible.\u00a0 At the other end of Vedder Road, on what was once a Canadian Forces base, one of the better examples of New Urbanism\u00a0continues to build out (its retail village so new it&#8217;s not yet on Google.)\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.garrisoncrossing.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Garrison Crossing,<\/a> <a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2434\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/08\/29\/price-points-arterial\/a-village-copy\/\"><\/a>a project of Canada Lands, is an attempt to build a mixed-use, mixed-density, amenity-rich alternative, with the hope that a walkable design may be sufficient to change the transportation habits of its residents.\u00a0 At the sushi-and-latte end of the social spectrum, it remains\u00a0in stark contrast to the Vedder-Road reality that flanks its eastern edge.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Where is this?
