{"id":26019,"date":"2014-10-10T10:00:10","date_gmt":"2014-10-10T17:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/?p=26019"},"modified":"2014-10-10T18:49:31","modified_gmt":"2014-10-11T01:49:31","slug":"viva-vdw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2014\/10\/10\/viva-vdw\/","title":{"rendered":"Viva VDW!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/spacingmedia.com\/spacingvancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/features\/indepth_feature-VAN.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"72\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alas, all good things must come to an end, and so it was just over a week ago the <a href=\"http:\/\/vancouverdesignwk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vancouver Design Week (VDW)<\/a> wrapped up, successfully having combined <a href=\"http:\/\/vanfashionweek.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vancouver Fashion Week<\/a> with several well-known annual design events,\u00a0including <a href=\"http:\/\/idswest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">IDS West<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pechakucha.org\/cities\/vancouver\" target=\"_blank\">Pecha Kucha<\/a>, along with\u00a0the announcement of the winners of the first ever City of Vancouver <a href=\"http:\/\/vancouver.ca\/home-property-development\/urban-design-awards.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Urban Design Awards<\/a>. Other highlights included the open studios and open houses (including LWPAC&#8217;s Urban Award winning <a href=\"http:\/\/lwpac.net\/news\/news\/projects\/residential\/monad\/\" target=\"_blank\">Monad<\/a>) that were open to the public. Congratulations to the organizers for finally getting what has been\u00a0for so long\u00a0just an idea off the ground, as we\u00a0all look forward to future iterations of the event!<\/p>\n<p>As would be expected of such an amphorous cross-disciplined\u00a0happening, the best moments were the ones where different design realms\u00a0suddenly became\u00a0intertwined, such as the\u00a0Built City @MOV\u00a0lecture <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumofvancouver.ca\/programs\/calendar\/past\" target=\"_blank\">Fashioning Performance: Fabric and Urban Form<\/a>, with Christopher Sharples, Principal\u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shoparc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">SHoP Architects<\/a> in New York, who also spoke the morning after in the Dialog hosted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raic.org\/bc\/?p=4117\" target=\"_blank\">Breakfast for Architects<\/a> &#8211; put on by the Metro Vancouver Chapter of the RAIC.<\/p>\n<p>And for those familiar with the recently released documentary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raic.org\/bc\/?p=4117\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Coast Modern<\/em><\/a>, directors Gavin Froome and Mike Bernard spoke at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/vanspecial.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vancouver Special<\/a> for one of their Parties for\u00a0Architects (P4A). HCMA also opened their doors to their office, hosting an &#8216;architecture block party,&#8217; which\u00a0quickly became a\u00a0wall-to-wall\u00a0architect party, once the rain cleared the patio.<\/p>\n<p>And while the VDW did so much, there is the potential for it to be much, much more,\u00a0as it most certainly should&#8217;ve incorporated the talk by Swiss architects Herzog and DeMeuron&#8217;s\u00a0and their\u00a0musings on the\u00a0new VAG (no design yet) in its fold. Neither could the organizers have known that Vancouver-based <a href=\"http:\/\/urbanarium.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Urbanarium<\/a> would put on its city wide Doors Open Vancouver the weekend after it finished, but such as it was.<\/p>\n<p>In New York City, the AIA refers to October\u00a0as &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.archtober.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Archtober<\/a>,&#8217; as it is similarly\u00a0a month of design inspired events, including the annual AIA conference of the NYC Chapter. With Buildex, the\u00a0Vancouver Home + Design Show, and the AIBC annual conference all happening\u00a0in October here in Vancouver, perhaps next year the VDW could become VDM.
