In other words, good luck in getting them to show up to an all-candidates debate unless you can change the dull, predictable format.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Vancouver Public Space Network realized this several years ago when it launched Last Candidate Standing, an election debate\u00a0unlike any other in Vancouver&#8217;s municipal campaign. In a reality show-style challenge, all candidates running for mayor and council are invited to take part to take part in three lightening rounds of questions, where the winners and\u00a0finalist are decided by audience\u00a0applause.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Issue of public democracy are central to the work we do. We organize this event because we want to change up what is often a tired debate format, and have a bit of fun with it,&#8221; said Paola Qualizza, Chair of the VPSN. &#8220;We invite every candidate who is running for Mayor or Council to take part because we believe that all candidates should have a chance to share the stage and show us what they\u2019ve got.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/LCS_ii_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26290\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/LCS_ii_600-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"LCS_ii_600\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/LCS_ii_600-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/LCS_ii_600.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The third edition of the event was held on Sunday, November 3, 2014\u00a0(previous editions were held in the 2008 and 2011 municipal elections), with 27 of the 49\u00a0candidates running for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/vancouver.ca\/your-government\/candidates-mayor.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/vancouver.ca\/your-government\/candidates-councillor.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Council<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0attendance. The decision to open the event up to all candidates rather than focus on the big\u00a0players meant more fun and unusual\u00a0antics.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Independent mayoral candidate\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/vancouver.ca\/your-government\/candidates-mayor.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Meynard Aubichon<\/a>\u00a0chose to beatbox his answers and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/vancouver.ca\/your-government\/candidates-mayor.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Cherryse Kaiser<\/a>\u00a0attended the event topless, entreating people to &#8220;live in the utter udder bliss of my Milky Way Universal breast vortex.&#8221; In an effort to garner more applause, the Cedar Party&#8217;s Nicolas Chernen ordered a pizza and handed it out members of the audience.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The event was MC\u2019d by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.industrialbrand.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Busse<\/a>,\u00a0Industrial Brand partner &amp; managing director.\u00a0Music was also an important part of the day&#8217;s activities, with professional gong player\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesoulofsound.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kathy Cameron<\/a>\u00a0letting candidates know when they had run overtime and \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenewshackletons.com\/\">The New Shackletons<\/a>\u00a0playing music during the five minute breaks between rounds.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Candidates were asked a variety of questions on Vancouver&#8217;s future, posed by a\u00a0Panel of Inquisition:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/metronews.ca\/author\/emilyjacksonmetro\/\">Emily Jackson<\/a>\u00a0of Metro News, CTV News reporter\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bc.ctvnews.ca\/about-us\/team-bios\/jon-woodward-1.873506\">Jon Woodward<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/Jackie%20Wong\">Jackie Wong<\/a>, UBC\/Megaphone Magazine.\u00a0These questions covered a diverse range of topics often debated in the media, including\u00a0how Vancouver can shake its \u2018no fun city\u2019 title, public transit, housing affordability and City Hall\u2019s\u00a0engagement with local neighbourhoods (you can watch the full video of the debate <a href=\"http:\/\/vancouverpublicspace.ca\/2014\/11\/04\/last-candidate-standing-2014-full-length-video\/\">here<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>When asked what her favourite moments of the debate were, VPSN Spokesperson Jessica Hum said there were &#8220;too many to name&#8221;, but she did mention three highlights, including\u00a0\u00a0RJ Aquino and Nicholas Chernan share a selfie <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rj_aquino\/status\/529060903023837186%20\">moment<\/a>;\u00a0Keith\u00a0&#8220;I&#8217;ve forgotten, what was the question again?&#8221;\u00a0Higgins, who was thrown off his game when Cherryse Kaiser (independent) exuberantly answered a question just before his turn. And, in the\u00a0final showdown between Andrea Reimer and Pete Fry. In response to Pete Fry&#8217;s numerous comparisons of Vancouver to Portland, Andrea said &#8220;I feel like I&#8217;m on the Pete Fry drinking game. She spoke of when she was sick in the hospital and saw the contrast between people there who had friends or family visiting them versus those who did not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;I saw how the people who had a steady stream of loved ones coming to visit them would perk up\u00a0and even walk. As soon as could get out of the hospital bed and got\u00a0back to\u00a0City Hall, I brought forth a motion for an <a href=\"http:\/\/vancouver.ca\/your-government\/engaged-city-task-force.aspx\">Engaged City Task Force<\/a>\u00a0to develop ways to help people get to know their neighbours better and improve engagement with City Hall.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>With a full house of attendees at the Last Candidate Standing event, the VPSN hopes that the audience was\u00a0left with an understanding that participating in politics can be fun and, as Hum states, &#8220;Your vote is important!
