Kids love toys they can move around like planes, trains, cars, ships and even public transport buses and monorails (now also available as toys). Classic children\u2019s stories like Richard Scarry\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Richard-Scarrys-Busy-Town\/dp\/0307168034\/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1418258461&amp;sr=1-4&amp;keywords=richard+scarry+books&amp;pebp=1418258466546\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Busytown<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/What-Do-People-All-Day\/dp\/0394818237\/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1418258436&amp;sr=1-3&amp;keywords=richard+scarry+books\" target=\"_blank\"><em>What Do The People Do All Day?<\/em><\/a>\u00a0 are full of colourful iconic characters that illustrate city life (such as foxes as janitors and bears as school teachers). There are also some more recent books like\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/gp\/product\/081186474X\/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&amp;psc=1&amp;smid=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB\" target=\"_blank\">In the Town, All Year \u2018Round<\/a><\/em>, The Planetizen\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetizen.com\/store\/kidsbook\" target=\"_blank\">Where Things Are, Near and Far<\/a><\/em>, and as urbanist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.downtowncoloradoinc.org\/?page=staff\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Garbo<\/a>\u00a0from Downtown Colorado Inc. suggested to me:\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lucias-Neighborhood-Pat-Shewchuk\/dp\/1554534208\/ref=sr_1_10?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1418160288&amp;sr=1-10&amp;keywords=neighborhood#customerReviews\" target=\"_blank\">In Lucia\u2019s Neighborhood<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(inspired by Jane Jacobs!) and<em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Franklins-Neighborhood-Paulette-Bourgeois\/dp\/189478698X\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1418160288&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=neighborhood\" target=\"_blank\">Franklin\u2019s Neighborhood<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Heather also suggested a board game called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/eeBoo-GMCOM-Community-Game\/dp\/B009369OPO\" target=\"_blank\">Community<\/a>\u00a0(for kids 5 and up): \u201cWhat\u2019s cool about this game is the goal is to collaborate, not compete, to create a community\u2014obviously a concept that is mirrored in real-life community-building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for computer games that allow you to build cities, the most obvious choice is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.simcity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">SimCity<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0the only computer game that I and most planning nerds ever played as a kid.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media.tumblr.com\/79c36da2706d76a381691462560db0b5\/tumblr_inline_ngefyhkn4s1qg4knb.jpg\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Little Citizen Naturalist<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No city is complete without nature, to teach your child about the importance of urban parks and nature in cities, you could give him or her a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hearthsong.com\/Fun-with-Nature\/Insect-Lore-Live-Butterfly-Garden-Netted-Pavilion.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Butterfly Nursery,\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hearthsong.com\/Fun-with-Nature\/Wood-Observation-Birdhouse-with-Clear-Back.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Wood Observation Bird House<\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0a season\u2019s pass to your local botanical garden, or &#8211; since its hard to see the stars in the city, a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hearthsong.com\/Fun-with-Science\/Battery-Powered-Moon-in-My-Room-with-Remote-Control.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Moon in My Room<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>***<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><em><strong>Jillian Glover<\/strong> is a communications advisor who specializes in urban issues and transportation.
