{"id":27844,"date":"2015-11-09T14:44:07","date_gmt":"2015-11-09T22:44:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/?p=27844"},"modified":"2015-11-09T14:46:24","modified_gmt":"2015-11-09T22:46:24","slug":"thousands-reimagine-downtown-2040","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2015\/11\/09\/thousands-reimagine-downtown-2040\/","title":{"rendered":"RELEASE: Thousands Re-Imagine Downtown Vancouver in 2040"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>11,000 Dreamers \u2018Re-Imagined\u2019 Downtown Vancouver as a Rain-proofed, Affordable Home for all in 2040<\/h2>\n<p>In 2040, downtown Vancouver will be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a healthy, life-affirming place<\/li>\n<li>a network of connected greenways and activated alleyways highlighted by art and businesses,<\/li>\n<li>home to young families and seniors<\/li>\n<li>affordable for anyone that wants to live there<\/li>\n<li>home to multi-national headquarters with a distinctive skyline<\/li>\n<li>\u2018rain-proofed\u2019 with retractable awnings<\/li>\n<li>supported by relaxed liquor regulations resulting in a renaissance of cafes and restaurants<\/li>\n<li>where all downtown employees earn a living wage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are just some of the specific \u2018how to\u2019 ideas creating <a href=\"http:\/\/reimaginedowntown.com\/report\">a vision for downtown in 2040<\/a> that is a 24\/7 \u2018mash up\u2019 of commerce, culture, creativity and community, according to the 11,000 residents, business people and visitors who weighed in as part of the Downtown Vancouver BIA\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/reimaginedowntown.com\/\">Re-Imagine process<\/a> this past summer.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/reimaginedowntown.com\/report\">new vision for downtown<\/a><\/strong> over the next 25 years includes an equitable, sustainable and friendly city that celebrates its waterfront setting. Where protected nature and creative urbanism successfully cohabit. Where digital technology is embraced. And, where our equal distance from Asia and Europe positions us as a city of influence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to congratulate the DVBIA on engaging thousands of Vancouverites in developing a new vision for a vibrant downtown,\u201d said Mayor Robertson. \u201cIt&#8217;s great to see such a strong outpouring of public support for city priorities such as increasing public space and making it easier to walk, bike, and take transit in our downtown. I look forward to delving deeper into the report and hearing broader public feedback on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Next Steps<\/h3>\n<p>The DVBIA launched its report to its members last night. The report is available at <a href=\"http:\/\/reimaginedowntown.com\/report\">http:\/\/reimaginedowntown.com\/report<\/a>\u00a0for community groups, businesses and the City to use to help implement ideas that most resonate with them. The DVBIA will use the research to inform its new five-year strategic plan.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>About the DVBIA<\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/downtownvancouver.net\/\">DVBIA<\/a> represents 8,000 property owners and tenants in the 90-blocks of the central business district and downtown south. Strategically, is supports access to downtown by all modes of transportation. It is in its 25<sup>th<\/sup> year of operation.
