In 1976, cities were struggling to survive, global warming was only feared by a tiny few, and the global rural to urban migration had just begun. Now cities are \u201cthriving\u201d but with economic disparity more glaring than ever. Cities like Vancouver are magnets for unimaginable personal wealth, while cities like Surrey BC accommodate wave after wave of immigrants of vastly lesser means. What are we to make of these transformations? What role, if any, can urban design play?\u00a0 Design, the very thing that made Vancouver so attractive as a place to invest, and, ironically, may have helped price Vancouver homes out of reach of average families.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1455069153071_70985\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We think there is still time to think, decide, and act. As such, the two-day SALA\/SCARP Urban Design forum\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban-design-forum.sala.ubc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Re-Imagining the\u00a0city\u00a0\u2013 The (im)possibility of Design<\/em><\/a>\u2014running\u00a0<span class=\"yiv6860261770\"><span class=\"yiv6860261770\">March 10 and 11<\/span><\/span>\u00a0at the Telus Theater of the Chan at the University of British Columbia,\u00a0asks four related questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">how can capital flows be directed for the good of all?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">how can democracy be protected in an age of oligarchs?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">how can design be a tool for social equity and an act of resistance?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">how can all of this reflect back on our first ambitions 40 years ago during the dawn of urbanist consciousness?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Key to the\u00a0concerns is this. A new\u00a0city\u00a0is emerging unnoticed within the shell of the old. As the centre\u00a0city\u00a0chokes on its own wealth, the surrounding\u00a0city\u00a0assumes roles shed by the center \u2013 for jobs, for homes, for immigration,for real community, \u00a0and for citizenship.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The\u00a0partners in this forum, the\u00a0City\u00a0of Surrey, will host a free panel on this emerging reality \u00a0called\u00a0<em>The\u00a021st\u00a0Century\u00a0City\u00a0is Not Where it Used to Be: The Former Suburb Becomes the Global\u00a0City<\/em>.\u00a0A panel of the regional leaders who have created the livable region and made the South of Fraser a true second centre \u2013 and the potential new centre of the region \u2013 will give their views on this dramatic shift.
