The name selected for Vancouver\u2019s new bike share program<\/a> to launch this summer is\u00a0Mobi<\/strong> (pronounced moe-bee).<\/p>\n

Vancouver already tops North America for active transportation. Adding Mobi bike share to the mix will help further extend the reach of walking and transit trips, and change the way people get around Vancouver. Mobi will be a great addition to our active transportation network, giving Vancouverites and visitors safe, convenient, and fun mobility to get around the city.\u00a0\u2014Mayor Gregor Robertson<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cAt its most literal, Mobi stands for \u2018more bikes\u2019,\u201d says Jerry Dobrovolny, general manager, engineering services. \u201cBut the spirit of Mobi reflects mobility, motion and momentum \u2013 everything that makes cycling in Vancouver an exhilarating experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur tagline, \u2018bikes we share\u2019, really reflects the community-based nature of the program,\u201d says Mia Kohout, general manager at Vancouver Bike Share Inc. (a subsidiary of CycleHop<\/a>), the firm contracted by us\u00a0to operate the program. \u201cIt\u2019s about sharing bikes, sharing the space, and sharing our city,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

Bike share locations<\/h2>\n

Vancouver Bike Share is working to finalize preparations for bike share to launch this summer, which includes identifying the best locations for public bike share stations to help fill the gaps in the active transportation network.\"Suggested<\/a><\/p>\n

The initial service area will include\u00a0the Downtown Peninsula, bounded by Arbutus Street, 16th Avenue, and Main Street.<\/p>\n

Founding memberships are now on sale<\/a><\/strong> for\u00a0$99 or $129 for one year depending on the plan chosen, reflecting deep discounts of close to half price, only available until June 30, Kohout says. “People who buy founding memberships will get the best deal and have the flexibility to grab a Mobi whenever they need one,” she adds.<\/p>\n
