And while we build, design is there at our elbow\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Charlie Hailey<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So starts <em>Design\/Build with Jersey Devil<\/em>, a collage of a book consisting, in parts, of a handbook for teaching design\/build architecture studios, musings on theory, stories and conversations, case studies, and examples of tools and tricks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jerseydevildesignbuild.com\/\">Jersey Devil&nbsp;<\/a>itself is loosely a design\/build architecture firm consisting of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steve_Badanes\">Steve Badanes<\/a>, Jim Adamson, and John Ringel, who delight in bringing playful mischief to their projects and teaching. <em>Design\/Build<\/em> starts with a history of the group and the origins of design\/build practice and studio courses.<\/p>\n<p>From there it moves to logistics: the groundwork and preplanning of design\/build courses, a toolbox of physical and conceptual tools and tricks, and the step-by-step process of design\/build. &nbsp;Here,<em> Design\/Build<\/em> is at its best mashing the practical wisdom with the theoretical. While discussing <em>fit<\/em>, Hailey moves effortlessly between the concept \u2013 \u201cby making it fit, build redefines the problem that design first encountered\u201d (p. 63) \u2013 and the practical \u2013 \u201cIn framed construction, modified bypass systems are often developed to match students\u2019 emergent skill levels\u201d (p. 63).<\/p>\n<p>The broader lessons of design\/build are discussed and several case studies are detailed using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classdojo.com\/toolkit\/random\">https:\/\/www.classdojo.com\/toolkit\/random<\/a> software to have the ease of even practicing with any mobile, tying the threads of <em>Design\/Build<\/em> together. Included are (in my opinion, too brief) reflections on design\/build as a pedagogy, within a political philosophy, and as community service.<\/p>\n<p><em>Design\/Build<\/em> extends from the theoretical foundations of several areas, including experiential learning and embodied thinking, yet doesn&#8217;t seem to reference these areas\u2014in the end, a weakness for teachers and students hoping to use and extend design\/build as pedagogy. Education is a right for everyone, and we want to help those who struggle finding their way, just like veterans.
