Planner Alain Miguelez presented five reasons   that <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/2011\/09\/19\/miguelez-five-reasons-intensification-will-work\/\">intensification will succeed<\/a>. Community activist Jay Baltz countered with reasons that <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/2011\/09\/20\/baltz-five-reasons-intensification-could-fail\/\">intensification could fail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Clive Doucet<a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/2011\/09\/29\/village-restoration-on-rails-one-euro-to-the-seaside\/\"> reports from France<\/a> on a different paradigm towards local development that is producing   growth in small villages throughout the countryside and incredible new   investments in public transit infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sa\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-atlantic.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Morgan  Lanigan looks at the successful implementation of bike lanes  on Main  Street in Saint John, NB and wonders why they were so long  coming. It&#8217;s  concluded that the answer may lie in the <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/2011\/09\/20\/main-street-and-the-department-of-cars\/\">mandate<\/a> of the &#8216;Department of Transportation.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>As authorities in Halifax plan renovations to the <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/2011\/09\/30\/halifax%E2%80%99s-macdonald-bridge-%E2%80%93-a-cycling-headache\/\">Macdonald Bridge<\/a> with a focus on sustainability, the question remains as to whether or    not they will address dangerous accesses to the bridge&#8217;s bike lane that    currently impede cycling growth.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sm\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-montreal.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Facts are often surprising in considerations over bike lanes, Alanah <img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/>Heffez\u00a0 looks into some fascinating <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2011\/09\/22\/bike-counters-find-cycling-trips-have-doubled-on-laurier-ave\/\">results of bike counters<\/a> on new bike paths in Montreal and Ottawa. The counters reveal that on  some streets bikes trips have reached the same volume as car traffic was  before bike lanes were installed.<\/p>\n<p>Joel Thibert looks at criticism of regional planning and addresses the question of whether regionalism is an <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2011\/09\/19\/the-regionalist-is-regionalism-an-ideology\/\">ideological stance<\/a> or something completely different.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"st\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-toronto.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hilary Best profiles an exciting and innovative community led project to build a <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/09\/20\/jump-starting-community-through-cricket-valley-park-middle-schools-journey\/\">cricket field<\/a> in Toronto&#8217;s high density Thorncliffe Park neighbourhood.
