{"id":3184,"date":"2011-10-03T05:01:24","date_gmt":"2011-10-03T12:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingvancouver.ca\/?p=3184"},"modified":"2013-01-21T07:19:24","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T15:19:24","slug":"price-points-facelift","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/10\/03\/price-points-facelift\/","title":{"rendered":"Price Points: Facelift"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Where is it, and what is it?<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3185\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/10\/03\/price-points-facelift\/olympus-digital-camera-4\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3185\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/PA010027.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/PA010027.jpg 640w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/PA010027-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is Yaletown Park (<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.ca\/maps?q=yaletown+park+vancouver&amp;hl=en&amp;ll=49.277048,-123.118967&amp;spn=0.00294,0.004281&amp;fb=1&amp;gl=ca&amp;hq=yaletown+park&amp;hnear=0x548673f143a94fb3:0xbb9196ea9b81f38b,Vancouver,+BC&amp;cid=0,0,1986578310309000033&amp;sqi=2&amp;t=h&amp;z=18&amp;vpsrc=6\" target=\"_blank\">see map<\/a>), and the sculture is<em> Eros Bendato Scrippolato <\/em>(Eros blindfolded and cracked) by Igor Mitoraj &#8211; a part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouverbiennale.com\/\">Vancouver Biennale<\/a>.\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancitybuzz.com\/2010\/03\/vancouver-public-art-the-giant-head-at-yaletown-park\/\" target=\"_blank\">More here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>An interesting case where the park is more controversial than the art.<\/p>\n<p>I first blogged about Yaletown Park &#8211; part of the public amenity package of the adjacent housing development &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/pricetags.wordpress.com\/2007\/04\/29\/new-yaletown-park-taking-it-hard\/\" target=\"_blank\">back in 2007<\/a>, just as it was being completed.\u00a0\u00a0 And<a href=\"http:\/\/pricetags.wordpress.com\/2009\/09\/24\/walking-tour-4-yaletown-park\/\" target=\"_blank\"> again in 2009<\/a>.\u00a0 Not many of my posts at that time garnered as much opinion, with most commenters disappointed or critical of the design of this hard-surfaced open space.\u00a0 I was undecided.<\/p>\n<p>Not now.\u00a0 I think it fails in a fundamental way: it doesn&#8217;t appeal to the people who were meant to use it.\u00a0 Yes, it&#8217;s a place &#8220;on the way,&#8221; as Yaletowners angle across the granite sets to somewhere they would rather be.\u00a0 But it doesn&#8217;t entice them to stop awhile.\u00a0Even the coffeehouse\u00a0on the dock seems insufficient to add a human presence.\u00a0\u00a0 And it makes\u00a0most\u00a0other kinds of activity difficult or discouraged<\/p>\n<p>The art\u00a0seems perfect for the space.\u00a0 In fact, if the site were used as an outdoor sculpture gallery, it might really work.\u00a0 So thank you, again, Vancouver Biennale, for animating another of our public spaces that could use a little help.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Where is it, and what is it? &nbsp; This is Yaletown Park (see map), and the sculture is Eros Bendato Scrippolato (Eros blindfolded and cracked) by Igor Mitoraj &#8211; a part of Vancouver Biennale.\u00a0 (More here.)
