{"id":32672,"date":"2018-10-16T22:11:13","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T05:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/?p=32672"},"modified":"2018-10-16T10:31:49","modified_gmt":"2018-10-16T17:31:49","slug":"vancouverspeculations-commercial-dr-kanaalstraat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2018\/10\/16\/vancouverspeculations-commercial-dr-kanaalstraat\/","title":{"rendered":"VancouverSpeculations: Commercial Dr.\/Kanaalstraat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/10\/VancouverSpeculations_Spacing_logoBanner_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-32668\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/10\/VancouverSpeculations_Spacing_logoBanner_600-600x72.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"72\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/10\/VancouverSpeculations_Spacing_logoBanner_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/10\/VancouverSpeculations_Spacing_logoBanner_600-300x36.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Diversifying transportation options is one of the most pressing issues in urban planning and design circles\u2014the creation and implementation of complete cycling networks being among the most hotly debated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>In Metro Vancouver, we are no strangers to the intensity of the arguments for and against bike lanes\u2014separated or otherwise\u2014and the City of Vancouver\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/vancouver.ca\/streets-transportation\/transportation-2040.aspx\">Transportation 2040 Plan<\/a><\/em> was adopted with some controversy, accordingly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One of the Plan\u2019s ongoing debates focuses on the creation of separated bike lanes along Commercial Drive and while I was recently walking around the lovely Lombok-Oost neighbourhood in Utrecht, Netherlands, I couldn\u2019t help but notice that the street right-of-way along its main commercial spine\u2014Kanaalstraat\u2014with its great cycling-friendly infrastructure, was quite a bit narrowed than that of Commercial Dr. A quick estimation confirmed that there was about a 20%-25% difference between the two streets from building face to building face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Despite that fact that Kanaalstraat is narrower it manages to&nbsp; accommodate two generous sidewalks (along with corner and midblock bulges and ample bike parking!), a parking lane on each side, two well-sized bike lanes and single driving lanes in each direction. All this in the service of creating a beautifully vibrant and safe multi-modal street: safe enough for people of all ages to ride, walk and drive at all hours of the day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In comparison, Commercial Drive\u2014considered one of Vancouver\u2019s more successful commercial spines, especially at its narrowest between First Avenue and Venables\u2014consists of relatively narrow sidewalks, parking lanes on both sides, and one\/two driving lanes in each direction. It\u2019s a street that, despite its local reputation for being pedestrian-friendly, remains clearly auto-dominated. As a result, many deem it unsafe for cyclist (which it is!) and, in turn, are anxious about the possibility of creating bike lanes along it, despite having some of the highest ridership in the city. This has naturally led to apprehension at all levels in following through with the <em>Transportation 2040 Plan<\/em>&#8216;s suggestion to install separated bike lanes along the corridor\u2014something well captured by <a href=\"https:\/\/bikehub.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/2018-votetobike-results-van_0.pdf\">HUB Cycling\u2019s recent survey of upcoming election candidate responses<\/a> (see Question #4).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Given all the controversy around this issue, I wondered how Kanaalstraat would map on to Commercial Drive. This <a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/10\/CommercialBike_1000.jpg\"><i>Speculation<\/i> shows the result<\/a>\u2014overlaying of Kanaalstraat\u2019s street design within the Commercial Drive\u2019s corridor, just north of First Ave. The intention was to show how a humble and pragmatic reimagining of the Drive can radically improve the quality and function of a typical Vancouver commercial high-street.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>***<br \/>\n<em><strong>Erick Villagomez<\/strong>&nbsp;is one of the founding editors at Spacing Vancouver.
