Last fall\u00a0I made the trip, not knowing exactly what I&#8217;d find.<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of reasons Oslo is looking to shift away from driving and get cars out of downtown. It is one of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-25722053\">the fastest growing cities in Europe<\/a>, and leaders see more efficient streets and transportation\u00a0as essential to managing this growth. But\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiatimes.com\/news\/world\/now-norway-bans-diesel-vehicles-after-dangerous-levels-of-air-pollution-in-oslo-269655.html\">the biggest factor is that air quality in Oslo and many places in Norway is deteriorating<\/a>. In winter, especially,\u00a0air pollution from diesel vehicles\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiatimes.com\/news\/world\/now-norway-bans-diesel-vehicles-after-dangerous-levels-of-air-pollution-in-oslo-269655.html\">can reach\u00a0dangerous levels<\/a>\u00a0and keep vulnerable children and seniors restricted indoors.<\/p>\n<p>Oslo\u00a0already has\u00a0car-free blocks and car-light pedestrian zones that\u00a0are full of people\u00a0even late at night. And\u00a0I knew it was a good sign when\u00a0I stepped off the bus from the airport and\u00a0immediately stumbled upon construction of a new rail line. But to make such a large area car-free entails going above and beyond a few projects here and there &#8212; it takes a comprehensive strategy.<\/p>\n<p>So Oslo is working toward its goal on many fronts. The city has been\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.carscoops.com\/2016\/07\/oslo-started-removing-parking-spaces.html?m=1\">aggressively removing car parking<\/a>, for instance,\u00a0and by the end of 2017, expects to no longer have any on-street parking in the city core. Off-street parking is also being addressed &#8212; all new developments are required to be car-free.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ruter\">Ruter<\/a>, the local transportation authority, plans to absorb all travel growth with buses, trains, and trams in addition to shifting some current car trips to transit.\u00a0Car-share services are beginning to proliferate as more people\u00a0go without a personal motor vehicle. Oh, and there&#8217;s this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingindustry.news\/oslo-handing-citizens-1200-for-electric-cargo-bike-purchases\/\">nifty plan<\/a>\u00a0to help people pay for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingindustry.news\/oslo-handing-citizens-1200-for-electric-cargo-bike-purchases\/\">electric-assist cargo bikes<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Bike lanes are getting\u00a0built or upgraded throughout the city. You won&#8217;t find ample, Copenhagen-style protected bike lanes yet, but the on-going removal of car parking is clearing space\u00a0for\u00a0many wide, red curbside bike lanes. Despite the lack of true protection\u00a0they feel safe, and unlike in the U.S., you will not find cars parking in them. Over four days, I probably could count the number of cars I saw blocking a bike lane\u00a0on one hand.<\/p>\n<p>The city&#8217;s bike-share,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oslobysykkel.no\/en\">Oslo Bysykkel<\/a>, has recently been completely\u00a0overhauled with more stations, better bicycles, and a more convenient user interface. You can unlock your bike by smart phone as you approach the station, just take it and go.<\/p>\n<p>Will Oslo&#8217;s city center\u00a0go completely car-free by 2019? Momentum is certainly on the city&#8217;s side. So sit back and take in\u00a0these scenes of a city making ambitious changes to its streets,\u00a0as well as interviews with public figures like\u00a0Oslo Mayor Marianne Borgen, who discusses\u00a0why reducing the footprint of cars is so important to the future of her city.
