On the one hand, a crowded system is pushing for more efficiency. On the other, exceptional regulations due to Covid-19 are calling for more social distancing. Reconciling these two opposing forces requires creative adjustments to the current system. Thus, this proposal occurs through technological interventions coupled with design enhancements.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"hp aj\">\n<figure class=\"hq hr hs ht hu hp aj paragraph-image\">\n<div class=\"hv hw ho hx aj hy\" role=\"button\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aj hz ia\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/9216\/1*Ltd24C0kDfRd5N3TtqQ5bg.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4608\" height=\"3456\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"ib ic bw bu bv id ie dx b dy dz fm\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Many cities are relying on underground rail systems to ease mobility and avoid disrupting on-grade space. Photography and graphics by authors.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"ci cj ck cl cm\">\n<div class=\"n p\">\n<div class=\"ab ac ae af ag cn ai aj\">\n<h3 id=\"178d\" class=\"ga gb cq gc b gd ge gf gg gh gi gj gk gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx ci dn\"><em class=\"gy\">Technological Interventions<\/em><\/h3>\n<p id=\"f3fa\" class=\"ga gb cq gc b gd ge gf gg gh gi gj gk gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx ci dn\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">There are efforts to minimize crowding at stations. Passengers are encouraged to purchase their tickets online through <a class=\"ei if\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/social-distancing-on-new-yorks-subway-may-be-too-hard-11590775621\" rel=\"noopener\">mobile applications<\/a> or use stored value cards. This reduces potential bottlenecks at train platforms during rush hours.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6aa3\" class=\"ga gb cq gc b gd ge gf gg gh gi gj gk gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx ci dn\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Earlier this month,<em> Translink <\/em>announced their <a href=\"https:\/\/buzzer.translink.ca\/2021\/08\/transit-app-to-show-empty-seat-predictions-for-buses\/\">collaboration<\/a> with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/transitapp.com\/\"><em>Transit<\/em><\/a> App to offer predictions on empty bus seats based on historical ridership data. Now imagine a scenario where users can access real-time data that is accurate and up-to-date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ga gb cq gc b gd ge gf gg gh gi gj gk gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx ci dn\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The key to this scenario is in integrating sensor-based counters at fare gates which limit the number of passengers in each station. These counters only allow passengers through if there is space on the platform to safely wait. Meanwhile, the sensors feed real-time data to mobile apps such as: <a class=\"ei if\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.google\/products\/maps\/transit-crowdedness-trends-around\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Google maps<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a class=\"ei if\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2020\/07\/28\/worried-about-a-busy-commute-crowdsourced-app-will-give-you-real-time-updates.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Rocketman<\/a> app for users to plan their trips ahead.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The same infrastructure can provide data on passenger&#8217;s exit location; the missing puzzle piece for implementing a distance-based fare system. According to <a class=\"ei if\" href=\"https:\/\/www.translink.ca\/plans-and-projects\/programs-and-studies\/transit-fare-review\" rel=\"noopener\">TransLink<\/a>, this system is \u201csimple, fair, and affordable\u201d since passengers pay relative to their usage rather than a flat-rate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ga gb cq gc b gd ge gf gg gh gi gj gk gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx ci dn\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This&nbsp;simple technological upgrade can help riders plan a streamlined trip, reduce chances of virus transmission, and ensure the economical viability of the system. Animation created by authors.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div role=\"separator\">\n<h3 id=\"f459\" class=\"ga gb cq gc b gd ge gf gg gh gi gj gk gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx ci dn\"><em class=\"gy\">Design Enhancements<\/em><\/h3>\n<p id=\"e143\" class=\"ga gb cq gc b gd ge gf gg gh gi gj gk gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx ci dn\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Currently, personal safety regulations require passengers to wear masks and sanitize hands; nevertheless, some people remain afraid of virus transmission within enclosed spaces. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/08\/10\/nyregion\/nyc-subway-coronavirus.html?action=click&amp;module=Top%20Stories&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;utm_source=Piers+Fawkes+Email+Newsletter+%28Distracted%29&amp;utm_campaign=0caa4fd90f-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_06_27_05_17_COPY_01&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_27849b2830-0caa4fd90f-426762653&amp;mc_cid=0caa4fd90f&amp;mc_eid=a119f5b80b\">studies<\/a> show that the ventilation system in a typical subway car is better than that in schools and offices. Where, typically, air inside trains gets fully replaced every 3.3 minutes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"befd\" class=\"ga gb cq gc b gd ge gf gg gh gi gj gk gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx ci dn\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Additionally, to combat transmission through high-touch surfaces in the subway system, cities and train operators published guides outlining the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces in the system. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectmagazine.com\/technology\/materials-and-coatings-that-reduce-surface-transmission-of-bacteria-and-viruses_o\">Preceding studies<\/a> show that copper is naturally an antimicrobial material. <em>Translink<\/em> piloted a program to test using copper on transit surfaces; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.translink.ca\/news\/2021\/march\/copper%20kills%20bacteria%20on%20transit%20surfaces\">results<\/a> show 99.9% of all bacteria is killed within one hour of contacting the surface.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ga gb cq gc b gd ge gf gg gh gi gj gk gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx ci dn\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This is useful not only for the current pandemic crisis but also to combat other viruses in any and all public spaces. The use of proper ventilation and copper prove to be beneficial for the general public health.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"n p do ig ih ii\" role=\"separator\"><em class=\"gy\">Design for Inclusivity<\/em><\/h3>\n<section class=\"ci cj ck cl cm\">\n<div class=\"n p\">\n<div class=\"ab ac ae af ag cn ai aj\">\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Ultimately, as we develop our mobility systems we should aspire to design for inclusivity. That is, as we limit access to crowded stations, there should be overspill space for waiting outside the stations.
