Forty<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">four proposals were submitted <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">from across the co<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">untry and beyond, including Iran, India, and the U.S. The competition included an overall <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">winner and runners<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">up, decided by a panel of architects, planners, and an entrepreneur, in addition to a <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Planners\u2019 Prize, decided by a panel of urban planners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cWe<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">were thrilled with the creativity and ambition of the submissions we received for The Mixing Middle,<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201d <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">says competition co<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">chair<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Marta Farevaag<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">. \u201c<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The winning submissions imagine innovative uses for single<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211; <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">family residential areas in ways that increase socia<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">l engagement, inclusion, and affordability at the individual <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and community levels.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">These designs are coming at a time when many municipalities are in the process of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">updating their city plans. This commercial viability<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">livability reminds me of Melbourne or cities in Europe<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2014<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">where you pick up fresh bread from one shop, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">groceries in another, and go for a haircut across the street. It makes for an elegant and compelling solution <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to residential communities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Jury chai<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">r and award<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">winning architect<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Richard Henriquez<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">adds: \u201cEach winning submission offered flexibility <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in design while responding to the natural and humanmade environment of their site. The honourable <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">mentions were notable for their artistic sensibilities, poe<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">tic narratives, and demonstration of the importance <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of sustainability.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The Planners\u2019 Prize was tied between the same two submissions that won second place overall. A <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">registered charity since 2015, the volunteer<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">run organization\u2019s mandate is informing and engaging the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">residents of Metro Vancouver to help guide communit<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">y decision-making.
