{"id":4306,"date":"2011-11-14T09:30:09","date_gmt":"2011-11-14T17:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingvancouver.ca\/?p=4306"},"modified":"2013-01-21T07:19:23","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T15:19:23","slug":"price-points-a-noshery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/11\/14\/price-points-a-noshery\/","title":{"rendered":"Price Points: A Noshery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Where is this, and why is it\u00a0not your average food cart?<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4307\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/11\/14\/price-points-a-noshery\/noshery\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4307\" title=\"Noshery\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Noshery.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Noshery.jpg 640w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Noshery-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/spacingmedia.com\/spacingvancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/features\/pricepoints-feature-VAN.gif \" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"72\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It&#8217;s in Portland.\u00a0 No surprise there, for those who have followed the migration of food carts up the west coast (some think the trend began in Los Angeles, or\u00a0really Mexico &#8211; and has its roots in the Hispanic community.\u00a0 Others think it&#8217;s Asian derived).\u00a0 Portland put on\u00a0its own twist &#8211; since the Rose City is home to so many innovations that involve small entrepreneurs, whether it&#8217;s about\u00a0burritos,\u00a0barristas or beer.\u00a0 (Here&#8217;s an insightful article &#8211; <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/11\/13\/opinion\/sunday\/the-entrepreneurial-generation.html?_r=1&amp;scp=11&amp;sq=portland&amp;st=cse\">Generation Sell<\/a><\/em> &#8211;\u00a0with\u00a0a distinctive Portland perspective,\u00a0in the New York Times.*)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Arguably, food carts wouldn&#8217;t have made it in Vancouver without overcoming the reticence of our public health officers (&#8220;Only hot dogs and popcorn &#8211; that&#8217;s it!&#8221;).\u00a0 But Portland, by proving\u00a0that their citizens didn&#8217;t\u00a0drop dead\u00a0by\u00a0consuming comestibles from a cart, made it possible for politicians here\u00a0to move it forward.\u00a0 (Thank you, Heather Deal.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But this particular cart is just one of a cluster &#8211; a food court in a parking lot.\u00a0\u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/dstreetnoshery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">D Street Noshery <\/a>consists of nine unique carts at 3221 Division, on a piece of under-performing asphalt (<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.ca\/maps?q=3221+division+portland&amp;hl=en&amp;ll=45.50497,-122.632551&amp;spn=0.002164,0.002454&amp;sll=49.891235,-97.15369&amp;sspn=46.422473,80.419922&amp;vpsrc=6&amp;hnear=3221+SE+Division+St,+Portland,+Oregon+97202,+United+States&amp;t=h&amp;z=19\" target=\"_blank\">map here<\/a>) along one of the reviving streetcar corridors\u00a0of Portland&#8217;s east side.\u00a0\u00a0There&#8217;s even a mini-brew pub in\u00a0a tent.\u00a0 And this is just one of several that dot the city&#8217;s inner suburbs, proving that cart culture is not just a downtown phenomenon.\u00a0 What seems to be helpful, though, is a ready market of hipsters-on-bikes and a supportive public culture looking for tasty, creative\u00a0fast food (chains verboten!) at\u00a0reasonable prices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So where should the first noshery show up in Vancouver? \u00a0How about on the northeast corner of Granville and Davie, in the slot of a parking lot between the Dance Centre and the Howard Johnson&#8217;s\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.ca\/maps?q=Granville+and+Davie+Streets,+Vancouver,+British+Columbia&amp;hl=en&amp;ll=49.277215,-123.126288&amp;spn=0.000001,0.000614&amp;sll=49.247946,-123.142619&amp;sspn=0.022804,0.039268&amp;vpsrc=6&amp;hnear=Granville+St+%26+Davie+St,+Vancouver,+Greater+Vancouver+Regional+District,+British+Columbia+V6B+2G6&amp;t=h&amp;z=21&amp;layer=c&amp;cbll=49.277215,-123.126288&amp;panoid=aQ1DW-e0WpuPVnXslk7PGw&amp;cbp=12,77.06,,0,-6.68\" target=\"_blank\">view here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">* The small business is the idealized social form of our time.
