Contrasted with the building stagnation in many American centers our   situation is hope for both caution and optimism.<\/p>\n<p>John Lorinc used his column this week to talk about Mark Osbaldeston&#8217;s new book <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/11\/23\/lorinc-the-crimes-and-misdemeanours-of-unbuilt-toronto\/\"><em>Unbuilt Toronto 2<\/em><\/a> which looks at proposed major developments that were never built.   Lorinc shows that book reveals several close calls with monstrosities as   well as a possible origin of second guessing on transit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"so\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-ottawa.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the City of Ottawa pushing ahead with plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/2011\/11\/24\/tonight-last-chance-to-stop-widerfaster-bronson\/\">widen Bronson Ave<\/a>,  Spacing looks at how the traffic artery currently harms the downtown  urban fabric and where concerned people can voice criticism of the  project.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the <em>Screen Grab <\/em>feature, Evan Thornton reflects on his new insights on the <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/2011\/11\/22\/bank-street-at-second-avenue-avalon-theatre\/\">social history of Ottawa<\/a> gleaned from the pages of\u00a0 Alain Miguelez&#8217;s extensive book on the history of theaters in the city.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sm\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-montreal.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Emile Thomas shares a recent experience which revealed his deep and previously unbeknownst daily relationship with the <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2011\/11\/23\/mes-nouveaux-colocs\/\">neighbours<\/a> in his building. Thomas uses this as an opportunity to reflect on how  to treat ones neighbours and expectations of urban living.<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2011\/11\/20\/the-sunday-building-project-now-actually-on-sunday\/\">Sunday Building Project<\/a> <\/em>offers up a little piece of the town of Mount Royal with a heavy theme of the city as provider, of curbside freebies.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-21274\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/?attachment_id=21274\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/spacingmedia.com\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-vancouver.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Vancouver&#8217;s   Director of City Planning, Brent Toderian, shares his take on the  early  results of an exciting public design and ideas competition to <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/11\/22\/4524\/\" target=\"_blank\">re-imagine<\/a> the city&#8217;s downtown road viaducts. Links are provided to the submissions in the <em>reCONNECT <\/em>design contest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"..\/2011\/11\/24\/release-urban-screens-and-city-building-a-public-talk-with-mirjam-struppek\/\">Urban Screens<\/a> with interactive facades, buildings projections and networked   communication are spreading to all kinds of urban environments around   the world. Erick Villagomez showcases a an event held this week to   discuss the issue of how these projections positively engage audiences   and contribute to the experience of society.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this week also saw the conclusion of the municipal election in Vancouver.
