{"id":4823,"date":"2011-12-06T14:12:07","date_gmt":"2011-12-06T22:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingvancouver.ca\/?p=4823"},"modified":"2013-01-21T07:21:40","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T15:21:40","slug":"price-points-a-golden-intersection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/12\/06\/price-points-a-golden-intersection\/","title":{"rendered":"Price Points: A Golden Intersection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Where is this, and why do they call it <em>The Golden Intersection<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4824\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/12\/06\/price-points-a-golden-intersection\/golden-intersection\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4824\" title=\"golden-intersection\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/golden-intersection.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/golden-intersection.jpg 480w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/golden-intersection-452x600.jpg 452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s Shanghai &#8211; to be specific, the view towards\u00a0the meeting of the Yan&#8217;an and South-North Elevated Roads (<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.ca\/maps?q=Golden+intersection,+Shanghai&amp;hl=en&amp;ll=31.226729,121.464672&amp;spn=0.013468,0.021136&amp;sll=31.226417,121.46405&amp;sspn=0.013468,0.021136&amp;vpsrc=6&amp;t=h&amp;z=16\" target=\"_blank\">map here<\/a>), two of the 14 freeways that criss-cross this region of 23 million.\u00a0\u00a0 And no, this is not a time-lapse photograph; the blue streaks are LED lighting that line the ramps where these arterials cross.<\/p>\n<p>And it is the property industry that has termed this &#8220;The Golden Intersection&#8221; &#8211; reflecting land values associated with office towers and government buildings that cluster around &#8220;People&#8217;s Square&#8221; adjacent to the freeways.\u00a0 Once a racetrack in the colonial era, when the British and French had extracted concessions from the Chinese in the mid-19th century, it is now the cultural heart of Puxi, the left bank and historic centre of this burgeoning, prosperous city.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, the urban environment\u00a0underneath these elevated roads is not unpleasant (<em>right, click to enlarge<\/em>), <a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4826\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/12\/06\/price-points-a-golden-intersection\/underneath-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-4826\" title=\"Underneath\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Underneath1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4825\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/12\/06\/price-points-a-golden-intersection\/underneath\/\"><\/a>even though they ran the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shanghaiguide.org\/Yan-an-Road-2748.html\" target=\"_blank\">Yan&#8217;an <\/a>flyover\u00a0down the centre of what was once a grand boulevard &#8211; Edward VII &#8211; that marked the demarcation between the British and French Concessions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The concrete has been painted in muted colours, lined with flowerboxes and, at night, spectacularly lit.\u00a0 The ramps are high enough to feel sculptural and they&#8217;re\u00a0 all surrounded by trees and greenery.\u00a0 (It&#8217;s almost enough to make one wonder about possibilities for our viaducts.)<\/p>\n<p>Up top, however, not so nice.\u00a0 The freeways, not surprisingly, are jammed for much of the day, as the Chinese unleash demand for vehicles by the rising middle class.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is just one image from the current issue of Price Tags 110\u00a0&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pricetags.ca\/pricetags\/pricetags110.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">downloadable here <\/a>&#8211; that explores urban design and development in Shanghai at this high point in its history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Where is this, and why do they call it The Golden Intersection? . .
