In doing so Thibert looks back to the origins of both ideas and their respective strengths and shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/spacingmedia.com\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-toronto.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hilary Best continued the discussion on breaking barriers to citizen engagement through <em>The Fourth Wall <\/em>series this week. The series looked at the increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/12\/06\/fourth-wall-the-changing-geography-of-local-political-representation\/\">size of local government<\/a>, analyzing the history of Toronto&#8217;s amalgamations and comparing councillor to constituent ratios around the world. The series also began a look at the<a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/12\/16\/fourth-wall-our-elections-back-to-basics\/\"> election process <\/a>by suggesting ways improve outreach to run for office.<\/p>\n<p>Concerned about the way that cities are often neglected or portrayed darkly in <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/12\/15\/gift-guide-great-childrens-books-that-feature-cities\/\">children&#8217;s books<\/a>, Todd Harrison presents a selection from his family library of books for children that celebrate and take place in cities, just in time for Christmas.<\/p>\n<div><!--more--><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/?attachment_id=21274\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21274\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/spacingmedia.com\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-vancouver.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Erick Villagomez recaps the results of the exciting <em>re:CONNECT<\/em> design competition to <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/12\/15\/and-the-winners-are-reconnect-stand-outs-announced\/\">rethink the space<\/a>currently occupied by Vancouver&#8217;s downtown traffic viaducts.
