a company that provides business communications across Canada.\u00a0 Which means\u00a0it is\u00a0still\u00a0performing the function it was built for: electronic connections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This was originally the CN-CP Telecommunications Building when it replaced the original Stirling Hotel <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/02\/13\/price-points-a-hint-of-what-was-to-come\/cambie-and-cordova-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6452\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-6452\" title=\"Cambie and Cordova\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Cambie-and-Cordova2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"391\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a>in the late 1970s.\u00a0(The\u00a0building, then known as the Bronx Hotel, can be seen in this 1891 shot\u00a0of Cambie and Cordova, right.)\u00a0 While its sleek modernism seems out of place at this corner where Gastown, Crosstown and the Downtown East Side all interface, there&#8217;s nonetheless a lot of &#8216;fit&#8217; here.\u00a0 The building curves nicely where Cordova makes a subtle shift, it holds both the streetface and the building height of its neighbours, and there&#8217;s even a little cornice up top.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Inside was\u00a0where the last days of the telegraph could be found &#8211; tons of mechanical switching equipment to serve that now-ancient format\u00a0which\u00a0evolved into other faster, tinier ways of transmitting information on cable that still finds a home inside this structure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more-->Two reasons why it&#8217;s worth noting.\u00a0 First, it was the early manifestation of Project 200 &#8211; a massive private-sector urban-renewal scheme that would have demolished everything between Woodwards and Granville Street and replaced it all with this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/02\/13\/price-points-a-hint-of-what-was-to-come\/project-200-and-waterfront-freeway\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6392\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-6392\" title=\"Project 200 and Waterfront Freeway\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Project-200-and-Waterfront-Freeway.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"391\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Secondly, it was where one of Campbell&#8217;s favourite\u00a0photo-ops\u00a0was taken &#8211; a shot of him\u00a0wielding a sledge hammer and wrecking ball.\u00a0 In the same mode, this shot below was taken at the beginning of demolition of Block 52 &#8211; a key component of the Pacific Centre development, facilitated by the city &#8211;\u00a0and that\u00a0probably best captures the\u00a0zeitgeist: Mayor Tom Campbell, perched on a wrecking ball, waving a hardhat, welcoming progress on the ruins of the past. <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/02\/13\/price-points-a-hint-of-what-was-to-come\/tom-campbell-on-a-wrecking-ball\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6540\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-6540\" title=\"Tom Campbell on a wrecking ball\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Tom-Campbell-on-a-wrecking-ball-417x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"358\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouversun.com\/news\/Former+Vancouver+mayor+Campbell+dies\/6098754\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Campbell died this month<\/a>, with only a few testimonials to his time.\u00a0 He will probably best be remembered for his<a href=\"http:\/\/archives.cbc.ca\/programs\/14\/\" target=\"_blank\"> battle with the\u00a0hippie culture <\/a>and the Georgia Straight, but his real legacy, as developer and mayor, is the &#8216;modernist&#8217; agenda &#8211; from West End highrises to Pacific Centre to freeways\u00a0&#8211; that he constructed or promoted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Much of\u00a0that\u00a0was fortunately stopped in its tracks with the election of the TEAM majority\u00a0 in 1972.\u00a0 Otherwise, a good part of old Vancouver would\u00a0 look rather like what we see on this streetcorner today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Thanks also to John Atkin.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Where&#8217;s this, what&#8217;s inside, and why does it look like this? . .
