It is characterized by mixed-use developments, typically with a medium-height, commercial base and narrow, high-rise residential towers to accommodate high populations and to preserve view corridors.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Pacific Palisades fits the definition, doesn&#8217;t it?\u00a0 And since it was built almost 50 years ago, it may be the earliest iteration of what evolved in the 1990s as the recognized\u00a0Vancouver Style:\u00a0 slim condo towers on top of a podium of sidewalk-hugging townhouses, with commercial storefronts along the shopping streets.<\/p>\n<p>Save for the townhouses, all the elements are there.\u00a0 The towers are certainly typical of\u00a0Sixties design:\u00a0squared blocks with simple floorplates and a balcony per apartment.\u00a0 But the podium\u00a0is\u00a0special, with its modernist arches now wonderfully restored except for the necessary rain canopy along Robson.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->According to Steve Ballegeer, who has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/uncle_buddha\/4608605943\/\">a terrific shot on his photostream<\/a>, the 20-storey tower on the southwest corner (Robson and Jervis)\u00a0was completed in 1966, while the 23-storey tower to the north was completed in 1968.\u00a0\u00a0 A third 22-storey tower was\u00a0imploded in 1994 to make way for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/uncle_buddha\/4255218693\">Palisades condominium tower<\/a>\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0a dramatic example at the time of the rip-roaring condo boom &#8211; along with the demolition of a\u00a0nicely proportioned\u00a0medium-rise office building that faced Bute Street.<\/p>\n<p>This complex,\u00a0built before the\u00a0strata-title act, was a luxury rental project\u00a0when the West End was associated with the Swinging Sixties &#8211; populated by\u00a0young people who would be working in the corporate towers a short walk away.\u00a0 The Palisades was later\u00a0converted to a hotel,\u00a0and, in a sign of the rejuvenation of the rental market, is\u00a0now converting back,\u00a0appealing to the\u00a0latest iteration of downtown dwellers.<\/p>\n<p>Or at least that&#8217;s whom the marketing department is\u00a0targeting, as revealing in its own way as any demographic analysis.\u00a0 Take a look:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/03\/19\/price-pointsthe-beginning-of-vancouverism\/olympus-digital-camera-12\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7558\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7558\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Papa-People-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"502\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/03\/19\/price-pointsthe-beginning-of-vancouverism\/olympus-digital-camera-20\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7610\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-7610\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Papa-People-51.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/03\/19\/price-pointsthe-beginning-of-vancouverism\/olympus-digital-camera-22\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7612\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Papa-People-yoga2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A few fun minutes can be spent at Robson and Jervis, comparing the people who walk by with the stereotypes in the windows.\u00a0 To be honest, I think PaPa nailed it pretty well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/03\/19\/price-pointsthe-beginning-of-vancouverism\/olympus-digital-camera-16\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7566\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-7566\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Papa-People-31.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"488\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One image in particular:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/03\/19\/price-pointsthe-beginning-of-vancouverism\/olympus-digital-camera-17\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7567\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7567\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Papa-People-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"583\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Transportation cyclists &#8230;\u00a0 in their 30s &#8230;
