part of the expanding light-rail system\u00a0that heads east out of Union Station.\u00a0 Points if you identified the Boyle Heights neighbourhood.\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.ca\/maps?q=Mariachi+Plaza+Los+Angeles&amp;hl=en&amp;ll=34.04777,-118.219038&amp;spn=0.007334,0.009656&amp;sll=49.891235,-97.15369&amp;sspn=47.029814,79.101563&amp;t=h&amp;hnear=Mariachi+Plaza,+Pleasant+Ave,+Los+Angeles,+California+90033,+United+States&amp;z=17\" target=\"_blank\">Map here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/05\/22\/price-points-music-transit-and-revival\/mariachi-plaza-10-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9853\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-9853\" title=\"Mariachi Plaza (10)\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Mariachi-Plaza-101-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The station has only been open for just over a year &#8211; but the plaza has long been\u00a0a centre for Hispanic music in Los Angeles, home to the annual Mariachi Festival.\u00a0 There&#8217;s even a gazebo\u00a0(<em>right, click to enlarge<\/em>), donated by the Mexican State of Jalisco, the birthplace of Mariachi music.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->But this plaza also fills an economic need.\u00a0\u00a0Require\u00a0some Mariachi music for a party or festival?\u00a0 This is where you come, where the musicians are waiting curb-side for an offer, rather like day-labourers elsewhere in the city.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/05\/22\/price-points-music-transit-and-revival\/mariachi-plaza-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9854\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-9854\" title=\"Mariachi Plaza (1)\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Mariachi-Plaza-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And\u00a0that&#8217;s only a part of\u00a0what is happening in\u00a0this beautifully sized urban space.\u00a0 Elsewhere under umbrellas, seated in movable chairs around small tables, are clusters of men convivially sharing the space around a statue of\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lucha_Reyes_(Mexican_singer)\" target=\"_blank\">Lucha Reyes<\/a>, a famous Mexican mariachi singer.\u00a0 They make the plaza welcoming merely by their presence, as they\u00a0monitor the flow of activity &#8211;\u00a0to the Metro line, to the shop behind them selling ice cream and smoothies, to the private lending library where you can borrow or buy a book, or\u00a0past the\u00a0murals which cover the walls and reflect the culture of a neighbourhood in revival.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/05\/22\/price-points-music-transit-and-revival\/mariachi-plaza-16-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9856\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-9856\" title=\"Mariachi Plaza (16)\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Mariachi-Plaza-161.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"391\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boyle_Heights,_Los_Angeles\" target=\"_blank\">Boyle Heights<\/a>\u00a0has over the last century been one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in the U.S. &#8211; a gateway for immigrants into Los Angeles who were often\u00a0prevented by restrictive covenants from settling in other parts of the city. Bounded by rail yards and industrial activity along the Los Angeles River, cut through by freeways, home to large public-housing projects &#8211; and then gangs and refugees &#8211; the neighbourhood has had a tough time.<\/p>\n<p>But with\u00a0the Gold Line,\u00a0a new school, workforce housing, better services\u00a0and a redesigned Mariachi Plaza &#8211; the best\u00a0new public space I saw on a study tour of L.A.\u00a0&#8211; things are looking brighter for Boyle Heights.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2012\/05\/22\/price-points-music-transit-and-revival\/mariachi-plaza-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9857\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-9857\" title=\"Mariachi Plaza (2)\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/Mariachi-Plaza-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"388\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can you guess where this is by the evidence?
