HALIFAX – On Tuesday November 9th Mayor Peter Kelly and the Halifax Regional Council will sit down and decide the fate of the P3 Convention Centre.  On the eve of this highly contentious decision Dr. Heywood Sanders, from the University of Texas will be in Halifax to review his understanding of  the economic, political, social and environmental impacts of convention centres.

Sanders has been considered the leading independent critic of publicly funded convention centres since the publication of his 2005 white paper Space Available: The Reatities of Convention Centres as Economic Development Strategy.    In the paper Sanders performs  an exhaustive analysis of national  trends in convention centre development in the States concluding that, “While the supply of exhibit  space in the United States has expanded, the demand for convention and trade show space has actually plummeted”.  Tonight and St. Mary’s University Dr. Sanders will be sharing his previous findings as well as assessing the viability  of Halifax’s proposed Centre.
