Canadian Urbanism Uncovered

Photo du jour: Glen Road

Glen Road is, along with Greene Avenue, one of just two links between Lower Westmount and St. Henri. Whereas the Greene Avenue connection is fairly seamless, Glen Road passes under the CPR tracks through a mysterious-looking tunnel. In a children’s novel there would be a wonderland on the other side, but in real life there’s just a statue of Louis Cyr (although I suppose that’s already pretty wondrous).

  1. Howdy!

Greene Ave passes under the CPR Tracks AND the Ville Marie expressway. I wouldn’t call it seamless, especially once you look at the graffiti there. Here’s a Google map.

  2. Strange, I always thought of it as Landsdown. I didn’t know there was a name change along the way to de Courcelle.
That underpass is magical, constantly wet. I’m surprised that there isn’t ivy growing all over it.

  3. I love that tunnel; haven’t been through it in a while, thank you for reminding us of it. The statue of historic strongman Louis Cyr is very cool as well.

If I recall, there is a similar tunnel farther west in southwestern Montreal, towards Lachine, that seems even more mysterious. Perhaps someone from that area could provide details.

  4. The reason its wet under there is because there used to be a river that ran in the area. On the Saint-Henri side is where the original tannery village used to be.

  5. I and a friend walked up the Glen Road one summer day in 1963 from Lacasse Street. It was a very hot day too. My friend and I visited the Westmount park and then to the Library. I recall the moments playing in the sand and then walking around in the library.

The walk back is no longer in my memory however the walk up the hill is vivid in my mind. I never new this was called the Glen Road until a few years ago when I was exploring the history of my family. Lovely photo.
