Winter-bound wandering

I don’t think I can take it anymore. This endless procession of snowstorms has made the winter combo of cold temperatures and grey skies even more unbearable. Even walking around the city, my favourite pastime, has lost its appeal when it feels like a struggle just to walk a few blocks along snowy sidewalks. (Luckily, I’ll get an early break from winter this year when I jet off for a month and a half in Hong Kong at the end of next week.)

Despite my winter doldrums, though, I thought this music video, for the song “Samedi” by 3 Gars Su’l Sofa, did a nice job at capturing the beauty of Montreal streets in the winter. Shot mostly on the streets, on buses and in the metro, it’s a pleasure to watch, even if you don’t particularly like the pleasantly unremarkable song that sounds like something that could have been made by a dozen other Quebec bands.

  1. It does drag on, but I’m actually really enjoying the procession of snowstorms. I don’t think I’ve lived through a prettier winter since, well, sometime during my childhood. I love getting up in the morning and finding the street covered in white fluff. Or coming out of the office at night and taking a walk in the dull orange light that’s trapped between ground and clouds. And the stillness of everything. The silence snow creates. I don’t know if it was just me, but the city (up in Little Italy at least) seemed numb yesterday. Every sound seemed far away, like wearing ear plugs.

What gets to me, though, are the roller-coaster-like changes in temperature we’re getting. From freezing to warm, from snow to rain to ice to blistering cold winds back to snow. I am not looking forward to the big thaw, the icy cold rains of March (not as worst as November’s though).

  2. Heh, I saw these guys filming on my street awhile back. Too funny to see the video.
