La compagnie générale des bazars, une société d’importation d’articles de maisons et de cadeaux, fut fondées à Montréal en 1889 par 2 marchands français : le baron Louis de la Polinière et le comte Jean de Plan de Sieyès.
L’année à laquelle cet édifice fut démoli est inconnue.
En conséquent, l’immeuble de 3 étages qui se dresse maintenant au coin Sud est des rues St-Laurent et Sainte-Catherine fut quant à lui, construit en 1950.

God, what a beautiful original building. Second Empire style, I think, by the looks of it. What a loss.
Indeed, what a pity. That would have made that corner so distinctive had it been kept – even more with the modern taller buildings behind it.

Well they are building something across the street from there that might just as well give this corner some distinctiveness… ;-)
Replacing nice buildings with mediocre ones seems to be a heavy tendency in urbanization. Can it be reversed?
David, with the new buildings slates to go up in the Quartier des Spectacles, I guess we’ll see. I suppose modern doesn’t have to mean mediocre. It just seems to work out that way. In Montreal, I believe, ESPECIALLY so.
