  1. un stationnement tellement sexy, vive le progrès

  2. That city block is an absolute mess. Amazes me how careless the city has been in granting building permits for some projects…

  3. Progress is not always bad. Most of us would not be happy living at the time the first picture was taken. I agree I like better the progress of most European cities, maintaining most old buildings and houses, but North American cities have other needs, and just criticizing “progress” in general will not take us anywhere.

  4. I’m not sure I understand what unique ‘other needs’ North American cities have over European ones? Living in London it’s interesting to see how despite ‘planning’ the history of the city asserts itself, old roads and alleys re-emerge as rights of way, shapes of habitation laid down centuries ago persist. I like the sprawl, the apparent chaos of historical patterns in a modern landscape. Beats living on an automotive chess board grid!

  5. Beautiful mansion vs. concrete parking hole. Hmm… tough one.

  6. Obviously, the parking structure is ugly relative to the mansion. The more recent picture, however, shows a much more efficient use of the land. Samuel Carsley’s driveway was HUGE, and was probably only available for his personal use. I don’t think many people would tolerate a private home taking up that much space downtown today. I think that’s the point about progress, it may be ugly sometimes but its necessary.
