Photo du jour: Portuguese pride

Most neighbourhoods in Montreal have a diversity of flags flying in support of the countries participating in this year’s Euro Cup. Not so for the neighbourhood just south of the Chabanel Street garment district. (Does it have a name? Or is it just Chabanel?). As I biked through there on Sunday, there were dozens of Portuguese flags flying from cars, balconies and windows. In fact, every flag that I saw was Portuguese, except for one lonely Turkish flag.

  1. Side question: how the heck do you bike up there? I find the idea of crossing Cremazie kind of terrifying. I biked up Rockland Road recently (choosing that over the even-more-terrifying l’Acadie) and if it wasn’t the drivers roaring up within an inch of me it was the truly unbelievable potholes.

  2. It’s actually really easy to bike up there. Just go up Querbes and there is a quiet bridge over the Metropolitan. If you keep going it takes you straight into Marché Central; if you cross the train tracks on the right, you go into the Chabanel district. Even better is if you bike up on one of Parc Ex’s quieter sidestreets and then cross over to Querbes on de Liège.

I spend a few hours biking up to Île de la Visitation on Sunday. It’s a really nice ride up from Mile End: no real hills, plenty of streets to choose from, and you get to explore a part of town that might be kind of tiresome by foot.
