Canadian Urbanism Uncovered

  1. I’ve noticed that, through the years and seasons, the Royal Victoria Hospital is the only building on the flank of Mont Royal that actually blends with the nature around it. It always looks at home in the trees. The fall and winter bring out its gothic nature, while spring and summer make it look lush and idyllic. I’ve never liked going in it mind you, but will often find myself admiring it from afar.

  2. J’espère qu’un jour on pourra enlever ces parkings…

  3. J’espère ainsi, aussi. Pas une amélioration du vieux. Mettez le souterrain de stationnement et faites un parc pour les patients !

Definitely nicer on the outside than inside: the very first night I ever spent in Montréal was there! It struck me as dark and gloomy, almost 19th century. (While visiting here at age 12 w/ my family, I came down with appendicitis. Luckily, one of my dad’s college classmates was a doctor at McGill.)

  4. Speaking of the Royal Victoria, there are some interesting sculptures by Michel Goulet on (!) and around the Royal Vic – around and up from the left side of the photo.

The Vic is a real beauty, and I dread the day that the MUHC superhospital opens and the Royal Vic is sold off for condos for the super-rich. If this scenario happens, citizens should demand that the parking lots behind the hospital be returned to soil and become part of Mont Royal park, a park of which the downtown area gets super-shortchanged, this would be an excellent addition to the city. I know it’s a crazy idea, but it’s also a very good idea.

FYI, these rear parking lots are THE best bike route to downtown from plateau, mile end, outremont, etc. Access from 2nd switchback corner of Olmstead road. You come out at Peel and pine. The view of downtown from up there is superb.

  5. oh wow! on dirait un château dans une contrée lointaine… c’était ma raison du jour d’être mélancolique. *soupir*
