Photo du jour: Ad scooter

Maybe the companies that run ad trucks down the city’s major streets finally realized how wasteful that was — it now seems that at least some of them have switched to scooters. Kate McDonnell snapped this photo last week. “Two of these things zipped past me yesterday on Saint-Viateur,” she wrote. “They may be slightly less damaging to the environment than the ones using pickup trucks, but they’re just as ugly. And they’re recruiting, so expect to see more.

  1. I saw a convoy of about five of these cruising up St-Laurent on Friday. They might use less gas, but it’s still needless ad clutter and needless street clutter.

  2. To make things worse, even if a scooter would pollute only as 1/10 of a truck , on Ste-Catherine we are seeing 10 scooters in a row to make sure we “get” the message. In the end, as much environemental waste and ten times the visual pollution! Argh!!

  3. And keep in mind that while they are smaller and less polluting than, say, a truck, two-stroke engines tend to be noisier and dirtier than four-strokes.

So if there are multiple scooters clogging up streets, there’s probably more pollution.

I wish they’d ban them all.

  4. Actually, I believe the city passed a law banning the ad trucks. the same should go for these scooters. Needless carbon being pumped into our atmosphere.

  5. I saw the job posting and wavered — I’m looking for work and this seems easy and weirdly fun. (I’ve never driven a scooter before, but have always wanted a moped.) Still, my heart won’t let me apply, because I am just so opposed to intrusive advertising like this.

  6. Oh, and you know, maybe I’m a cynic, but I don’t believe the marketing companies are doing this because they realized it’s wasteful — it’s all about the benjamins, baby.
