If you’re heading down to the end-of-summer Main Madness this weekend, you might want to take a break from the crowds to explore a quieter part of the Main: this Sunday, Mile End Memories and Les Amis du boulevard Saint-Laurent will be hosting “The Voices of Mile End’s Main,” a walking tour of St. Laurent Boulevard from Mount Royal to Van Horne.

Meet municipal politicians and owners who contributed to the construction and transformation of the section of Saint-Laurent Boulevard that was part of the independent municipality of Saint-Louis at the turn of the 20th century. You will also have the opportunity to hear the stories of builders, shopkeepers and residents representing several cultural communities who worked and lived on Mile End’s Main over time.

The tour will last from 2pm to 5pm. Tickets can be purchased for $12 at the Amis du boulevard tent on St. Laurent just south of Marie-Anne.

  1. The overpass in this picture, the end of Van Horne, offers one of the great view of Montreal, Mount Royal from the north east. You will have an excellent view of the mount royal park and the outremont’s summits.

Best thing is, it’s less then 15 seconds from boul St-Laurent via a circular staircase (ok, angular actually).

Check it out the next time you go north on St-Laurent (foot, bike, car). stop and go up the stairs to this almost-secret view of the mountain.

Oh, and this tour sounds great!
