Plaza d'achats Lachine Shopping Plaza

Taken in Lachine, Rue Notre-Dame, near 28th Avenue, on August 31st, 2008.

This is a picture that I took on Sunday afternoon, on a pleasant walk that I did in what would be Old Lachine, in the area where the Lachine canal starts. Sure, there are new condos being built in the area, but the neighbourhood feels like it’s straight out of the 60s, with signage like this. The Dairy Queen on the corner with 32nd Avenue surely adds to the effect of old working-class neighbourhood. From the Spacing Montreal archives, I just discovered that Chris DeWolf wrote an article back in October 2007: Wandering around Lachine.

  1. 30 years after Bill 101, seeing scratched off English signs still bothers me. I don’t understand why people get so anal about these kind of things .. as long as French is present and it isn’t written only in English, I don’t see what the problem is…

  2. I do remember this neighborhood, lived there in 1968-69. Used to have an A&P across the street, and later next to it, a “Lasalle” department store…

Good old days, before Galeries Lachine was not build yet, Mr Steinberg was waiting a moment before putting another of his supermarket…and a Miracle Mart…

Lachine had 2 Dominions, an IGA on Provost and on Dixie shopping center, downtown stores had a Woolworth, plus supermarkets like “Dionne”, “Spot”, and the “Lachine Market”, thus after a blaze, was rebuilt into a “Union Market”, which became the IGA (which moved, I believe…)…

Sad these days, Notre Dame Street in Lachine is not what it used to be…

Anyway, memories of some good old days !
