The Tree of Life by Joseph Rifesser was originally located in front of the UN pavilion during expo ’67 before it was moved to Lionel Groulx metro station in 1977. It is made from a walnut tree trunk.

This sculpture is one of my earliest childhood memories of the metro, along with the brightly colored circles at Peel station where my parents and I got off each morning on the way to the McGill daycare. (I also distinctly remember my shock when, a couple of years later, I figured out that the metro actually ran underground).

  1. This is one of my earliest metro memories, too- unlike you, I knew the metro went underground, but I was massively disappointed to see that the train went through a cement tunnel- I had expected to see earth, tree roots, and tunneling moles!
