  1. It’s nice to see worn out houses being renovated but the new colors are kind of sad :(

  2. I think the only thing that actually improved is the disappearance of that really ugly flashy green color on the balcony handrail and fence (or whatever it’s called).

  3. The new brick is quite unfortunate, and probably unnecessary. Brick only very rarely needs to be replaced. A repointing would probably have been sufficient.

  4. The only good thing about this is that the building was not replaced altogether with a condo that clashes with the historic Plateau architecture.

  5. It’s not terrible. Could have been worse. As for the brick, it may have needed replacement if it was absorbing water and humidity. Depends on what the original quality was. I’ve seen a lot of brick work on construction from the 1960’s, 1970’s and even 1980’s that need replacement due to poor quality.

  6. better just to have demolished his badboy and brought some height to the area!

  7. That was an odd house.. and I have always been curious as to why it was left in such a state for so long even if it is prime real estate!

And yes, the modifications could have been far worse! It’s sad that the original windows went, but in our climate they were certainly not the most energy-efficient!

  8. The plateau-Mont Royal (City of Montreal) has extremely strict rules concerning the preservation of original design. Everything must remain the same, guillotine windows must remain guillotine, etc… The brick and windows needed replacing and the choice of brick that is permitted is very limited. Unfortunately, the light in the photo does not clearly represent it’s true color. Thank you to Guillaume for all the work that you do, I am a newfound fan.

  9. It seems ok. Except for minor window/door changes, I can’t imagine the original look at its completion date would have looked much different than this. I agree that the brick colour on screen could be misleading.

  10. I would love to see the owners plant some grass on the roof/in planters outside the window to bring the space some colour – that could be a good finishing touch. Otherwise good improvement!
