Canadian Urbanism Uncovered

Photo du jour: rue de la Gauchetière

Nobody quite seems to know how to properly write the name of the street that forms the central axis of Chinatown. I’ve seen De la Gauchetière, de La Gauchetière, La Gauchetière and just Gauchetière. Since the street was named after Joseph-Daniel Migeon, sieur de la Gauchetière, the proper rendition would seem to be “rue de la Gauchetière.”

But really, who cares? This is the city whose heart and soul is “la Main,” after all.

  1. Yeah, “la Main.”

It took me a few seconds to properly decipher the new posters in the metro. “I love the hand? —cogs slowly turn in brain— Ohhh…”

They probably shouldn’t have made MAIN all-caps. Makes it harder to identify as a proper noun. My two cents…

  2. Shouldn’t the proper, bilingual Montreal version be “Of the Left(literal-translation-of-final-morpheme-here) Street”?

    Let’s not be intolerant.

  3. This is one of the most interesting yet overlooked parts of the city. Chinatown should be expanded.

  4. I always found this to be a strange street name. What about renaming it?

I always loved the name Dorchester…

  5. How about a reference to it’s original patronym:
Rue Osborne. It would make historical anthropology a lot easier too. It’s a shame that we have buried some of our heritage this way already for the sake of renaming.
