Until the 1960s, signs and advertisements were far more loosely regulated than they are today, as you can see in this 1943 photo of Papineau and Mount Royal. (The billboard you see here is for the Canadian Women’s Army Corps.)

Well, that was also the war effort. What is sad is observing the tram tracks on both Mont-Royal and Papineau – and there is at least one line turning the corner there. The corner is nicely rounded to accomodate them – if memory serves me well, that is the northeast corner of the intersection. Most of the buildings seem the same.
