Canadian Urbanism Uncovered

  1. There’s a group pulling an animal in the older shot (some kind of university mascot thing?).

Also, have others noticed that in just about every “old” shot, there seems to be much more street life and vitality than in the new?

  3. I’m a student at UQAM and believe me: that entire area is jammed with people all day long not to mention all summer long. Also, the city has been reconstructing the street for the last three weeks.

One thing I’ve noticed since moving here two years ago is that Montrealers tend to complain an awful lot.. about everything.. all the time.. non-stop.. Don’t fix the road = complain. Fix the road = complain. Too many people = complain. Not enough people = complain. Build something new = complain. Don’t build anything new = complain.

There seems to be a perception that in other cities, the roads, subways etc. are in perfect condition, everything runs smoothly 24/7 and each new building is an iconic masterpiece. I wish that everyone would live somewhere, anywhere else in North America for a year or two and realise just how lucky we are here.

I guess I’m a real Montrealer now, I’ve just complained about complaining!

  4. Though I am a complainer myself, I agree with Todd Spurrell.

  5. Todd – very true. Great observation. I live in Los Angeles and believe me, there are just as many problems out here. And plenty of inaction. It is pretty much the same.
