Pour faire suite à l’article sur le façadisme écrit par Alanah, voici un exemple de rénovation fort intéressant qui n’est toutefois pas encore terminé. Cette maison construite en 1907 pour James Gardner Thompson sur le chemin de la côte des-neiges, aujourd’hui située entre 2 conciergeries de style château, fut sauvée de la démolition lorsque l’îlot sur lequel elle se situe fut reconnu site historique en octobre 2002. En effet, un promoteur souhaitait démolir cette demeure ainsi que la maison voisine afin de construire une tour d’habitation.
Subdivisée en 5 logements au cours des années 1940, cette maison fut également occupé par des bureaux d’architectes au cours des années 1980. Le terrain qui était désormais occupé par une végétation sauvage après 17 ans d’abandon est peu à peu réaménagé en jardin tandis que l’intérieur de la résidence fut totalement démoli afin d’être reconstruit de façon luxueuse.

I don’t see how taking away all the trees and bushes leads to any improvement
The 2 houses were abandoned, all windows were boarded and the land was a total jungle ! Renovated them is a big improvement, especially for the neighbors.
Credit where credit is due. The developer who originally planned to demolish the houses and build condos in their place was Jonathan Wener, chairman of Canderel. When the city said no, he chose to restore the homes for he and his family. Vision en Vert has been a very careful steward of this project.

While it is true that we were forced to remove trees in the rehabilitation of this enclave, many were growing into, and out of the foundations of the houses, and many of the bushes were merely overgrown weeds. What you have to realize is that we transplanted 64 trees, many of them mature, and that does not include the shrubs. We have saved numerous animals and reloacated them with the help of charitable animal rescue organizations, all of which we actively support. I challenge you to find developers who are as conscious of the environment as we are, not in rhetoric, but in action. In an urban environment there are always compromises that have to be made.
After the colossal amount of work that has gone into this project, very few will contend that Thompson and Sparrow’s condition is not much improved.
